Living in areas of the United States with higher levels of air pollution is associated with an increased risk of Parkinson's disease, according to a study.
The study looked at fine particulate matter, PM2.5, which is less than 2.5 microns in diameter. Fine particles come from motor vehicle exhaust, the burning of fuels by power plants and other industries and forest and grass fires.
People in the highest exposure group had an average annual exposure of 19 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) of fine particulate matter. People in the lowest exposure group had an average annual exposure of 5 µg/m3.
After adjusting for other factors that could affect the risk of Parkinson's, researchers found an association between Parkinson's disease and average annual exposure to fine particulate matter, with people in the highest exposure group having a 25% increased risk of Parkinson's disease compared to people in the lowest exposure group.
Researchers found the strongest association between air pollution and Parkinson's disease in the Rocky Mountain region, which includes Lake County, Colorado, which is southwest of Denver, and its surrounding counties. The risk for Parkinson's disease in those counties increased by 16% when moving up from one level of fine particulate matter exposure to the next level.
Air pollution was also associated with higher rates of Parkinson's disease in the Mississippi-Ohio River Valley hot spot, which includes Tennessee and Kentucky, but the association was weaker in these areas, with a 4% increase in risk when moving up one level of fine particulate matter exposure to the next.
Said Krzyzanowski: "In the Mississippi-Ohio River Valley, for example, Parkinson's disease risk increases with increasing air pollution exposure until about 15 µg/m3 of fine particulate matter, where Parkinson's disease risk seems to plateau."

What about smoking cigarettes/marijuana and or vaping?
“Lake County, Colorado, which is southwest of Denver”
The South Park cartoons are to blame....
We know several people, who have developed Parkinson’s:
SF Bay area N, E and S.
Panhandle NW Texas and adjoining Oklahoma area.
West Coast of Floriduh and East Coast from Jacksonville to St. Augustine.
The only common factor is many had been put on a statin drug to lower their cholesterol. Most were in fairly good physical shape when they got this damn stuff.
The guys, who have stayed active physically seem to last longer re better health. Their wives approach is often being like Drill Sergeants to keep their husbands active.
Most with this damn disease are guys.
There is a diabetes belt across the south that has been strongly correlated with pm2.5 pollution.
This is the kind of stuff we need to be targeting with environmental efforts. Stuff that actually causes harm. Not Carbon Dioxide that plants need to thrive that could actually help feed the world.
The winning strategy is not to poopoo on environmentalists but to change the direction to something useful.
“The winning strategy is not to poopoo on environmentalists but to change the direction to something useful.”
That’s silly talk! Doesn’t fit their agenda.
You have something there:
I call BS. Having lived in the LA metro ca ‘64-’65 which isn’t identified as higher than the Mississippi-Ohio River Valley with smog so dense your eyes would burn from the pollutants yet the Mississippi-Ohio River Valley has almost no pollution compared to LA, NY, or SF. Notice those areas are NOT mentioned.
My FIL died ca ‘2003 and suffered from Parkinsons and lived in central KS, as far from pollution as you can get.
“The only common factor is many had been put on a statin drug to lower their cholesterol”.
A teaching Cardiologist put me on statins (starting with Mevacor) following a huge *Scandinavian study. A year later, he told me that statins also removed plaque from the brain’s vasculature.

My only gripe after 30 years of statin drugs (Atorvastatin) is the occasional nighttime leg cramp; however, I can sense its arrival and promptly straighten the affected leg fully.
(Being a light sleeper has its advantages).
;)

I’ve been thinking the same thing for years.
Most, if not every Parkinson’s patient we have known or met was on a statin.
Good luck trying to prove any connection/relationship.
This is all designed to manipulate people into the RV rouse. It is sad that people here do not know when they are being manipulated.
What is the average diet of those in “the diabetes belt”
Googling “Statins and Parkinsons” I do see some articles indicating that statins can be associated with Parkinsons.
If you’re trying to make a case that milk gravy and sweet tea generate PM2.5 pollution which causes diabetes, we’ll hear none of it!!!
Nothing against you Danny, but I am sick and tired of these “maps” using the same colors in different hues. The “map” in your post was broken down into four (4) areas. Why not use Red, Yellow, Blue and White?
Anytime I see one of these “maps” I ignore it. They are produced that way to manipulate, not to inform!
