Three historical shipwrecks uncovered in the Mediterranean

Two of the shipwrecks were likely from the end of the 19th century or beginning of the 20th century, including a "large motorized metal wreck" with no traces of cargo. In that wreck, researchers noted that the davits, which would have been used to lower lifeboats, were facing outward, which means any crew may have been able to leave the ship. The second ship was likely a wooden fishing boat.

A third shipwreck was likely a merchant vessel that sailed between the first century BC and the second century. The ROV spotted artifacts that appeared to be amphoras, or tall, two-handled jars with narrow necks used by Greeks and Romans, possibly to store wine.

The team hopes that looking through archives could reveal the individual names of the ships that sank since none of them was easily identifiable.

Meanwhile, exploration along the Italian continental shelf revisited three Roman shipwrecks dating between the first century BC and the first century, including two merchant vessels and one cargo ship. All three littered artifacts across the seafloor, including amphoras, ceramics, building materials, jugs, pots and lamps.

The items were likely part of trade between cultures that crisscrossed the Mediterranean thousands of years ago.

Not only that, it *is* one. :^) I just went through the Robert Ballard keyword and added the shipwrecks kws, although while editing them into the other list I noticed two or three duplicates. :^)

One of my ancestors died in a shipwreck in 1748, probably in the Adriatic Sea.

A Historical Shipwreck

as opposed to a ‘normal shipwreck.;

What is the difference?

Historical had cannons.

‘Normal’ has AR’s.

I had at least a couple of ancestors that had close calls -- one had the ship go down but survived (his sister didn't), the other (much earlier) fell overboard during the trip across the Atlantic. Whew, that was close.

One of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Lynch, Jr., of South Carolina, was “lost at sea” near the end of 1779. He was attempting to sail to France for his health. He was only 30 years old (the second-youngest of the Signers).

Historical means multiple countries are going to start hassling you for “their treasures”. I’m not really sure why anybody looks anymore, finding them always turns into a nightmare.

Nah, it was probably garum, not wine. If so, Captain likely scuttled the ship to get away from the stench.

Kind of a reverse SSS.

He wouldn’t have wrecked the ship, but he and the crew had finished off the wine a few hours earlier.

Kinda like the voyage of the USS Constitution:
The U.S.S. Constitution (Old Ironsides) as a combat vessel carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers!). However, let it be noted that according to her log,

"On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and 79,400 gallons of rum."

Her mission: "To destroy and harass English shipping."

Making Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum. Then she headed for the Azores, arriving there 12 November. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.

On 18 November, she set sail for England. In the ensuing days she defeated five British men of war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchantships, salvaging only the rum aboard each. By 26 January, her powder and shot were exhausted. Nevertheless, although unarmed she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde in Scotland. Her landing party captured a whisky distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons of single malt Scotch aboard by dawn. Then she headed home.

The U.S.S. Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February, 1799, with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whisky and 38,600 gallons of stagnant water
