The worst I’ve ever seen was in a video where the operator of an engine lathe (metal) leaned in too close to the spinning chuck and workpiece. It wasn’t pretty and no Hollywood special effects could’ve made it seem so gruesome. Industrial accidents are some of the worst you’ll ever see or hear about, and having even a close call with one can be traumatic.

:: leaned in too close to the spinning chuck and workpiece ::

Reminds me of the demise of Mark “The Bird” Fydrich.
RIP, Mark...cause you didn’t go that way.

... engine lathe (metal)..

They look so innocent as they spin that 200# of inconel at 800sfm dont they? I'm a 30+ year machinist/programmer and I still have all my fingers....but I seen some stuff. Seen a 3700# ring (jet engine compressor part) come off a Bullard VTL. The E-stop only cut power and no brake on the motor. I bet the banging could be heard across th street. I think the operator soiled hissef.

Yep - I worked in a machine shop for a couple years in my early days - saw some pretty gruesome mishaps - in the first week, the guy training me cut his thumb off by trying to take a shortcut....

I had a girlfriend who was nearly scalped by a lathe...she had her hair tied up as required, but it came lose and was caught by the spinning object, pulling her head down as her long hair wound around it.

It ripped loose a large section of her scalp, and gave her a concussion to boot. The physician who put her scalp back together did a great job, and you couldn’t even see the stitches.
