Turning back the clock on brains aged by COVID-19 (Fisetin and quercetin may help)
Medical Xpress / University of Queensland / Nature Aging ^ | Nov. 22, 2023 | Julio Aguado et al

Posted on 11/30/2023 5:08:20 PM PST by ConservativeMind

University of Queensland researchers have found a way to reverse a cellular process triggered by COVID-19 that contributes to premature aging of the brain.

Dr. Julio Aguado and a team used synthetic brain organoid models, grown in a laboratory from human stem cells, to study the effect of different SARS-COV-2 variants on brain tissue.

"We found COVID-19 accelerates the presence of 'zombie' or senescent cells, which accumulate naturally and gradually in the brain as we get older," Dr. Aguado said. "Senescent cells are known to drive tissue inflammation and degeneration, leaving patients exposed to cognitive impairments like brain fog and memory loss."

Dr. Aguado said confirmation that COVID-19 was a catalyst for this premature aging prompted an attempt to reset the biological brain clock.

"We used the brain organoids to screen a range of therapeutics, looking for any capable of removing those senescent cells," he said.

The researchers found four drugs that selectively eliminated the cells caused by COVID-19—navitoclax, ABT-737, fisetin and a cocktail of dasatinib plus quercetin (D+Q).

Dr. Aguado said the drugs rejuvenated the brain and decreased the chance of neurodegenerative symptoms in the organoids, as well as in a mouse model infected with COVID-19.

"More research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms at play, but this study marks a significant step forward in our knowledge of the intricate relationship between viral infections, aging and neurological well-being," he said. "Long term, we can expect widespread use of these drugs to treat persistent post-acute infection syndromes caused by viral infections like COVID-19."

Fisetin worked on its own, while quercetin needed a prescription drug, dasatinib. That combination has been used in other studies as a senolytic.

If a mixture of drugs can be found to lessen or eliminate brain fog in people with Long Covid, like myself, that would be great.

The exact same symptoms of MRNA vaccines...wierd.

I had never heard of Fisetin antioxidant. The link you posted says “One such flavonoid, fisetin (3,3′,4′,7-tetrahydroxyflavone), is found in various fruits and vegetables, such as strawberry, apple, persimmon, grape, onion, and cucumber.”

How do you like that? Eat your fruits and vegetables!

Strawberries are at the top! You can find sources for Fisetin and Quercetin supplements online or at places like Sprouts or Natural Grocers.

(C.M. Apologies! Looks like I double posted, with edits!)

Very interesting info. Thank. There's a tremendous amount of research on the effects of flavonols on health, aging, and memory.

There sure are a lot of Fisetin supplements available on Amazon.

I took a Cocoa Flavanol (CocoVia) for a while during COVID but discontinued it due to cost; I may have to reconsider. But I see that cocoa is a source of only two flavanols: Epicatechin and Procyanidins.

I continue to take Quercetin for antiviral properties (started May 2020 upon recommendation of Roger Seheult who provided "COVID Updates").

Here's a table of all flavonols available from food sources and their therapeutic effects:.

I have a friend who got Covid and is suffering from this brain fog / freeze... It’s a terrible condition. He’s a retired criminal lawyer and one of the most intelligent individuals I’ve ever met.

He was very good at his job too and sadly got one individual who was guilty as hell off from a first degree murder charge... Then again, he saved another individual from going to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Criminal lawyers are fascinating characters and it’s too bad that good ones aren’t in a prosecutors office. In the case where he saved the innocent person from going to prison, the prosecutor’s key witness was the murderer... Some prosecutor’s are as dumb as door knobs.

We take Quercetin everyday because it helps absorb zinc.

Zinc is said to have antiviral properties in human cells. Getting dietary zinc INTO the cells is the issue. Quercetin, among other things including hydroxychloroquine, is said to improve human cells’ ability to absorb dietary zinc.

Zinc kills viruses at the cellular level but you have to get it there. Quercetin gets it there.

I was having a discussion with someone from another thread, and he said that niacin taken with zinc is what gets zinc to the cellular level. In this thread, Quercetin is what gets zinc there.

There's much confusion out there about what works and what doesn't. I'm not saying this in spite or anger, but for someone like me who's trying to find a solution to the Long Covid riddle, the conflicting information I'm finding makes it difficult.

All I can tell you is that we have been taking the Zelenko protocol for almost two years and we haven’t had a sniffle since last November when I’m sure we got covid but it was like a mild 3 day head cold with a lingering cough so we didn’t bother to get tested. The in laws got it at the same time and were sicker than dogs. The BIL had to be rushed to the hospital and almost died.

Here’s the protocol:
Povidone Iodine 1-3 drops in water.
Zinc 50 mg.
Quercetin 500-800 mg (we take 800)
D3 5,000 IU (we take 4,000)
C 3,000 mg
Famotidine (pepcid) 80 mg (we only take 20-40)

In addition we take K2, super B complex and turmeric daily.

Here’s the thing. Before I contracted Covid I took Quercetin, Vit C & D, and Zinc, and I still got really sick with Covid. Granted, I had pneumonia too, but none of those supplements stopped me from getting deathly sick (I spent six days in the hospital), and I really don’t know that they would do me any good now. If the science was there to disprove me I would welcome it, but I don’t want to go out and purchase all those items if they won’t do me any good.
