The Trump Trial, Columbia Anarchy—and Hope for New York

For a fleeting moment this spring, New York City actually feels like that famous 1976 Saul Steinberg cover for the New Yorker—the one that captures the now-faded solipsistic conviction of the city’s residents that nothing of significance happens beyond their little island.

“View of the World From 9th Avenue” looks out west at a flat, anonymous planet that exists unknown across the Hudson River, the vast empty plains beyond “Jersey” dotted with little settlements like Kansas City and Chicago, as the alien nation beyond the metropolis diminishes with perspective toward a Pacific Ocean narrower than the three blocks between the eponymous avenue and the Hudson River, until the world ends in a little clump of vacant land called China.

Almost 50 years later life imitates art and for a week or two at least Gothamites can be forgiven for thinking this really is where everything of any import on earth is happening.

Down past Ninth Avenue, near the southern tip of Manhattan in the state courthouse, the world’s most famous native New Yorker sits like a sullen Buddha, in forced contemplative silence, as a prosecutor tries to convince 12 of his fellow New Yorkers and a judge that the once and would-be future president should be sent to prison for a caper involving a porn actress and a bookkeeping fiddle.

Uptown, beyond where Ninth Avenue becomes Columbus and ultimately Gaza, the flower of America’s youth spend the dying days of an academic year championing the cause of belligerent religious fanatics who would burn them alive if given the opportunity.

I’m pretty sure the judge and jury decided this before they sat down.
