A North Carolina cafe customer is out $2,000 as her go-to diner posted her entire credit card information online for the world to see.
Rhonda Deaver paid her weekly visit to Smith’s Cafe in Kinston following her doctor’s appointment on April 30 and dined at the restaurant, approximately 80 miles southeast of Raleigh.
During her drive home, Deaver received a call from her bank telling her she left her credit card at the cafe.
When she returned to the diner, cafe staff told Deaver they had taken a picture of the front and back of the card and posted it to a local Facebook group to track her down.
“Hey guys, Ms. Rhonda Deaver you’ve left your debit card here at the store, we have placed it in a secure location. Please if you know her let her know we have it and would love to make sure it is returned!!” the cafe posted to the “Word of Mouth Kinston” group.
But the well-meaning gesture wasn’t thoroughly thought out.
The employees forgot to blur out any of the numbers on the card, leaving the personal information open for all ill-intended individuals.
Multiple purchases using the card’s numbers left Deaver responsible for $2,000 worth of charges.
“I couldn’t believe they did that, but I was sick thinking I might be responsible for all those charges,” Deaver told WCTI.
Fortunately, the card’s security feature didn’t allow some of the purchases to go through.
“It had been used a whole lot, a whole lot of declines — but a whole lot that went through,” the aggravated customer said.

Credit card... no problem, if the credit card company is notified in timely fashion. Debit card... a little less certain.
The staff all have masters degrees in some ____ Studies.
I visit Kinston quite a bit to look after my best friend’s father. It is a very wholesome town and everyone there is very sweet and mostly unworldly (in a sweet way) - it is quite shielded from the evils of the world. It is my experience that most people there do the right thing and wouldn’t believe that people would steal a cc number. Good BBQ at Kings and The Beef and the Baron is just awesome for steaks, their salad bar and you meet everyone in line!
Unless the Cafe owners want VERY Bad publicity(and they likely already have it), they’ll be paying this lady’s credit card bill.

Nailed it! They need to cover for this boneheaded move, quickly!
The card company usually takes fraudulent charges off.
This was pure malice.
You should be able to go online and lock your card as soon as you discover it missing.
Sounds like they are all conservatives.
It was a Debit card.
This beats the story earlier about the woman opening her car window for the bear because she thought it was friendly….
I would sue every employee there.
A second mistake:
*NEVER* say ‘No comment’ (or take the 5th, or say ‘on the advice of my lawyer I say nothing’).
“No Comment” = “I’m guilty as sin, don’t care, and F-U”.
The only acceptable response in the 21st century is to take FULL responsibility immediately, state clearly what you *HAVE DONE* (not ‘are going to do’) to completely rectify the situation, state that the employee involved has been fired, list what your are doing to recompense the wronged party, and do all of these before the second post hits Facebook, X, or twitter.
Taking more than 10 minutes to completely rectify a gaffe such as this is suicide for all but the very largest corporation.
Have you hired a lawyer lately? How would you cover those costs?
I'd go meet with the restaurant management and politely ask them to fix their mistake by covering the costs.
I'm guessing they'd do the right thing.
I hope nobody takes that advise. Remain silent.
My credit union would erase any charges if they are notified right away.
I guess I was “lucky” when the waitress just took the numbers of me and everyone else at the table and probably sold them privately rather than tell everyone. When I saw 5 charges at a Walmart in Maryland I shut down the card right away. The next week I found out that everyone at the table had their number stolen.
