Maybe it’s time to leave excess ‘Catholic guilt’ behind
Arkansas Catholic ^ | October 19, 2022 | Aprille Hanson Spivey

Guilt is universal, starting with Adam and Eve’s original sin. And guilt isn’t all bad. It can be God’s divine gut-check for us, a way to recognize we need to be led back to his mercy.

But the term “Catholic guilt” can take on different meanings. It’s a cultural phrase that has seeped into generations of Catholics, parishes and pop culture. The phrase even has its own Wikipedia page.

Understanding how guilt can be good or dangerous in our lives can help us open our hearts to God’s mercy.

She probably had one of the best lines in the 80's,

Jews learn guilt at home, Catholics learn guilt at school.

The current Pope is probably for killing a baby out of the womb, he is a cafeteria Catholic like Biden and Pelosi, at least secular Jew Schumer is honest in his hatred towards Israel.

The current Pope is probably for killing a baby out of the womb,

No, he isn't.

You can criticize him for much, but please don't lie about him.

Pope Francis respects US Supreme court decision and condemns abortion

I’ve heard, “The Jews invented guilt, but the Catholics perfected it.”

When people know they are guilty they usually feel guilty, unless they are sociopaths, like my D-I-L.

Wallowing in feelings of guilt is really not necessary.

The soul-healing Sacrament of Penance is always available and efficacious for those who approach the confessional for the right reasons, and in the proper frame of mind.

Excess guilt is not the problem these days.

“Guilt” is a word hardly, if ever, used in Catholic catechesis. “SIN” is common, but we all know, there’s an obvious way out of sin....

I suspect its just another post-modern term, created by atheists and secular psychologists and pundits, applied to the Church as form of abuse and propaganda against it

went to Catholic school for 16 yrs...

the Catholic guilt is actually the constantly enforced idea that we are or should be involved in solving all poverty, ignorance and suffering in the world...

constant collections on Sunday for the poor or for missionaries...

teaching and nursing pushed...

remember in school the nuns had a little jar on their desk for dimes for the poor...

its what made Catholics pretty good citizens/volunteers/donors....

its white guilt that I never had though...so I guess I'm bad.../s/

It was a sin for you to wanna feel up Ellen. It was a sin for you to plan to feel up Ellen. It was a sin for you to figure out a place to feel up Ellen. It was a sin to take Ellen to the place to feel her up. It was a sin to try to feel her up and it was a sin to feel her up. There were six sins in one feel, man!

along the same lines, our local head of Catholic Charities came out and TOLD us that all whites are racist so since that statement, they don't get a dime nor any items for collections....

he condemned the likes of my parents for being white, with them being faithful silent peaceful protestors at an abortion clinic for yrs and yrs..

if we are so bad, they don't need our tainted money.

“The current Pope is probably for killing a baby out of the womb”

I have my problems with Francis but don’t understand how you can make that statement. When sick babies or injured adults are denied basic life-sustaining treatment and die and it becomes news, he has always spoken out strongly against it.

Interesting topic though. In my home I suffered under heretical Jansenistic Catholicism which goes way overboard on God’s Justice to the almost denial of His Great Mercy which is present even in the Old Testament (Is 1:15-20; Joel 2:12-14). Can result in Scrupulosity.

And yet some people who speak of excess guilt are trying to do away with healthy guilt. When the natural law is broken through abortion, contraception, homosexual acts, or even when the sins are not unnatural but grave, there should be guilt. No to excess guilt but yes to legitimate guilt which is conscience’s way of saying something is off, something is wrong.

A lot of Jewish people were at the forefront of legitimizing porn, abortion, gay marriage and their guilt is not “Jewish” guilt but legitimate guilt. IMO, part of Biden’s anger is he knows many of the evils he defends are wrong. Deep down he knows he’s a fake Catholic.

Same thing Adolph said. Welcome back to 1930’s Germany and the collective guilt of the JOOOOS.

Guilt is underrated. And desperately needed for many in our modern society.

I see you’re woefully uninformed on the driving forces behind the moral collapse of the past half century. Yes, they needed the complicity of Christians. To immediately pull out the Anti-Semitic/Hitler card when certain Jewish people are criticized is weak stuff.

“The only reason that Jews are in pornography is that we think that Christ sucks. Catholicism sucks. ... Pornography thus becomes a way of defiling Christian culture and, as it penetrates to the very heart of the American mainstream (and is no doubt consumed by those very same WASPs), its subversive character becomes more charged.” -Al Goldstein

So you are telling me that a Jewish guy who owns a deli is responsible for pornography?

“they needed the complicity of Christians.”

So you believe all Christiana are responsible for pornography.

Every daddy and mommy should have child sex slave and proclaim their faith the LGBT Agenda. If it was good enough for our president and our leaders, then it ought to be good enough for the rank and file openly to pray for legalized Adult Child Attracted believers.
