Reddit and OpenAI announce a partnership that will give OpenAI's ChatGPT access to Reddit data.

The new partnership will also enable Reddit users to use new AI-powered features.

Reddit shares are trading higher in Thursday's after-hours session after the company announced a new partnership with OpenAI.

What To Know: In a new blog post, Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership that will give OpenAI's ChatGPT access to Reddit threads and enable Reddit users to use new AI-powered features. The two companies will also collaborate on advertising.

Under the partnership, OpenAI will bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and other related products, which is expected to help users discover and engage with Reddit communities. OpenAI will gain access to Reddit's Data API, which will enable OpenAI's tools to better understand and display Reddit content, especially on recent topics.

The partnership will also see new AI-powered features come to the Reddit platform. Reddit said it will be building on OpenAI's platform of AI models to bring its own "powerful vision to life." OpenAI will also become a Reddit advertising partner.

"We are thrilled to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with uniquely timely and relevant information, and to explore the possibilities to enrich the Reddit experience with AI-powered features," said Brad Nightcap, COO of OpenAI.

Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman added that giving ChatGPT access to Reddit data upholds the company's belief in a connected internet. He expects the new partnership to help new audiences find communities on Reddit.

It seems like the data should only be collected from the point forward after all current users sign a new agreement to allow it. It would be like Free Republic allowing OpenAI to have access to all the posts from the beginning of time.

Not that I don’t think there isn’t some AI somewhere spying on Free Republic.

In the early days a meta tag “NO ROBOTS, NO FOLLOW” would supposedly keep an HTML page from being indexed and showing up in search results. I just found an old page of mine from the 1990s that, of course, showed up in the search results. :^)

Who wants to bet that OpenAI will be taught to ignore conservative content on Reddit and suck up all the woke crap?

Perhaps, but I doubt that anyone or their views will be safe from OpenAI’s run-amok robotic intelligence simulation.

Honoring “NO ROBOTS, NO FOLLOW” was purely voluntary, as you found out.

What a trove on FR! Could be used for good with all the rich content and could be used for evil.

There were so many search engines back when — all of them started as crawlers of the web, but one was actually called WebCrawler. AltaVista was the first really nice one that worked well, but Yahoo started as a giant manually edited web index, as did all the “so-and-so’s list” sites. Eventually Google came along and within a year or two AV was moribund and got bought by some other entity. The Wayback Machine / Web Archive was one site that ignored “NO ROBOTS, NO FOLLOW”, and over the years I’ve mostly been glad about that. :^)

AltaVista was located below my company on a hill in Palo Alto. I used AV extensively and switched to Google not long after i learned about it.

Wow, DEC... gone nearly 30 years. They used to sponsor the Nightly Business Report during its golden age (Paul Kangas et al). Some years ago I saw a pile of tech arriving at the local electronics recycler, and there was a DEC workstation or two in the bin, looked to be in good shape. I passed.

Interesting...I didn't know the origins...
AltaVista was created by researchers at Digital Equipment Corporation's Network Systems Laboratory and Western Research Laboratory who were trying to provide services to make finding files on the public network easier. Paul Flaherty came up with the original idea, along with Louis Monier and Michael Burrows, who wrote the Web crawler and indexer, respectively. The name "AltaVista" was chosen in relation to the surroundings of their company at Palo Alto, California. AltaVista publicly launched as an Internet search engine on December 15, 1995.

Reddit censors people for anything. No matter how benign some sub reddit moderator will cancel your account.

Reddit records your computers MAC address.
You can use this program to change the address: TMAC v6
https://technitium.com/tmac
You will also need to create a new log in and email account as I did.

My crime? I commented at a r/startrek site that on the new Star Trek STD <- yep... that no one smiled. I was instantly cancelled. It turns out that Paramount ran that sub reddit.

There’s very little conservative content on there now and what content is there is heavily modded (you could even say kept centrist).

Any true right leaning forum gets banned immediately - so the source information “crops” to feed ChatGPT will be leftist by design.

On the bright side - there’s less and less useable content on Reddit these days because most people know their posts will be used as slave labor.
