The Battle Renewed on Wednesday--Another Glorious Charge by Hancock--The First Line of Rebel Works Carried--The Result of the Day's Fighting Somewhat Favorable--The Battle Probably Renewed Yesterday.

Special Dispatch to the New-York Times.

SPECIAL DISPATCHES TO THE N.Y. TIMES.

WASHINGTON, Thursday, May 19.

The skirmishing which began yesterday morning at daybreak settled into a heavy engagement, lasting through the forenoon, and culminating in another brilliant charge by HANCOCK on our right, when he drove the enemy a short distance, and carried their first line of intrenchments. Up to our last advices he had steadily defeated all attempts of the enemy to expel him from this position. Aside from this success the results of the engagement are understood to have been somewhat favorable, though in no sense decisive. The rebels maintained their position with great tenacity, and officers from headquarters describe their fortifications as exceedingly formidable.

The belief is general in military circles here that the struggle must, in all probability, have been renewed to-day.

LATER

WASHINGTON, Thursday, May 19 -- 11:20 P.M.

Advices from headquarters of the army up to 10 o'clock this morning state that the battle of yesterday had not been renewed up to that date. Our lines had been slowly but steadily advanced upon the enemy.

The latest edition of this evening's Republican has the following, but up to this date there is no official confirmation of it: "The most reliable information from the front to-day if that Gen. GRANT succeeded yesterday in nearly turning the whole of LEE's right. This was done more by a sudden movement of bodies of troops, to the complete surprise of LEE, than by actual fighting, except with artillery, which was only for the purpose of making feints while the strategic work was going on.

Good Morning Professor.

If FR was on in 1864 I would have been a FReeper. A Southerner.

I probably wouldn’t have posted this after Gettysburg, but now I will...

The Confederacy is done man. To late to sue for peace.

Ever heard the word, “carpet bagger?”
