A 13-year-old boy who gave a girl a lovebite at school is facing an assault charge, an allegation his parents call excessive.

Police in Richland, Texas, issued the teenager with a summons for assault by contact after the girl's parents reported the incident to Richland Middle School, officials said.

The boy's mother, Patricia Singh, said her son had been punished with a three-day suspension from school. He was not named because of his age.

Assault by contact, a class C misdemeanour, carries a fine of about $US280 ($400). The boy, who pleaded not guilty at his court hearing, told the judge he gave the girl the lovebite but was innocent of assault.

"He's not an angel," Mrs Singh said. "But he's not a bad kid."

The boy is accused of grabbing the girl at the end of the school day and giving her the lovebite, according to police reports.

Mrs Singh said her son and the girl had been kissing and hugging throughout the day.

She admitted her son needed to be punished and she had spoken to him about appropriate behaviour with girls. "I don't see us paying nearly $US300 for a hickey," she said

"It doesn't make sense. You have kids in Dallas schools having oral sex; this is a hickey."

My grandson just got out of Richland Middle School this year - and I seem to recall a number of hickey's on him in the 8th grade....doubt those chicks paid 300/hickey!

A love bite and the cops are called in? So much for sex is a private matter. In the old days, a hickey wasn't a big deal. A suspension and a hefty fine plus an assault charge thrown in is excessive for leaving a reminder of what you mean to your girlfriend on her.
