Workers at the Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon, VT found 2 "missing" nuclear fuel rods-right where they were supposed to be.
A small "media storm" had erupted in April, when nobody could pinpoint the whereabouts of the 2 spent fuel rods: very probably because a tanker truck had vanished in Pennsauken,NJ,and two lots of Rheocrete- a product which can, when combined with the proper chemicals,be converted into an explosive - had been stolen.
"Ah-hah !", the Media screamed."All the ingredients for a dirty bomb have been stolen! We're doomed !" Some of the channels showed graphics of the effects of such a device. It was enough to make you consider moving into the hills !
Quite recently, the geniuses at the nuclear power plant got to wondering why there were two long 40" aluminum cylinders in the spent fuel pool, and, after much head-scratching,somebody decided to check the records.
The records revealed General Electric had supplied the containers, and that they were designed for the storage of spent fuel rods. After more head-scratching,along the lines of "What do you suppose in in those things?",somebody (probably the janitor) came up with idea of using remote video equipment to take a look. Sure enough, the missing fuel rods were inside ! (The janitor probably got fired for being a smart-ass.)
The tanker truck and the Rheocrete are still missing: not all that surprising when one considers the fact truck hijacking and cargo theft are cottage industries along the Eastern Seaboard.
I can almost guarantee you won't see this story on the six o'clock news tonight...or ever !
Its always in the last place you look.
Must have found the one that flies out of Homer Simpson's pocket into the sewer at the beginning of each episode.
I just hate it when i missplace my spent nuclear fuel rods. Mrs. Allegiance is always chewing me out for leaving them around the house, especially beside the heavy-water pool.
I've noticed that too.....};)
Let me see - behind the copier in Los Alamos !?
I heard that Kerry used all his navy training to good use and dove into the pool to find them. Thank God this man will be in charge soon.
No, but you may be amused or amazed to see there is ANOTHER MISSING FUEL ROD CASE -this on in Georgia (?) being reported today.
I know the concept of a "dirty bomb" is a scarey one,but if you review all that goes into making one of those monsters, you begin to realize (as al-Qaeda did) it's not a very practical way of doing business.
No doubt they all voted for Dean, Leahy, Jeffords and Bernie Sanders.
Yeah,no more nukes ! No more nukes !
