GOP Hullabaloo

Excitement is always the name of the game in NYC, but especially when major league political events are thrown into the mix. In this run-up to the GOP convention at Madison Square Garden (August 30 - September 2), media hype and controversy clearly dominate the news. Sure, the mainstream media, now more accurately dubbed the "partisan media", are not fans of President Bush and the Republicans. But the strong whiff of sensationalism surrounding the GOP convention is more about business than politics - In essence, publishers must sell newspapers and magazines, and news broadcasts must bolster their ratings. Be assured that the media will continue to harp on the lunatic fringe that's poised for protest, and the possibility - albeit, the very remote possibility - of an al-Qaeda terror strike in NYC when the convention is underway. However, it's vital to remember that terrorists would rather exploit easier targets, rather than the more difficult ones that are rife with intensive security.

Now let's examine the anarchists and their planned demonstrations that have caused such a flurry of discussion within the ranks of the news media. I particularly enjoyed the over-the-top May 17 edition of "New York" magazine, a Left-leaning publication if ever there was one, with the cover bellowing: "The Circus is Coming to Town - A Bush-hating nation of freaks, flash-mobbers, and civil-disobedients is gathering to spoil the GOP's party", followed by the confrontational adage "Cops to Protesters: Bring it On!" The magazine posed this key question: "Will these five days (of protest) push Bush out of office or spark a red-state backlash that cements his reelection?" For me, the answer is evident. The convention will not only strengthen the resolve of Republicans, it will also sound the clarion call to independents for their support.

By all accounts, radical protestors are bent on causing mayhem through a variety of unlawful and unsavory tactics that would halt trains and usurp police time and resources during the GOP convention. How are these kooks and troublemakers being trained? According to an intriguing piece by investigative journalist Judi McLeod of Canada Free Press, the Ruckus Society (reportedly funded by Teresa Heinz-Kerry through her Tides Foundation) has produced a "how to" book for conducting "mass sit-ins, blockades and pie throwing at high-level officials". The Ruckus Society also endorses throwing marbles under the hooves of police horses, pelting police horses with slingshots, and confusing and miscuing bomb-sniffing police dogs. Although the primary goal of these fanatics is to disrupt the GOP convention, certainly their actions would compromise public safety as well. Ms.McLeod's article quotes Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Timoney who accurately refers to these extremists as "criminal conspirators". You have to ask yourself if it was wise for Teresa Heinz-Kerry, wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, to forge links with a very disreputable group such as the Ruckus Society.

Given the serious allegation that Teresa Heinz-Kerry's money is aiding and abetting criminality, I would expect law enforcement authorities to thoroughly examine the circumstances. Moreover, if proven to be true, then the American people should be made aware of Teresa Heinz-Kerry's funding of militant causes and law-breaking behaviors. This unraveling story might be a political bombshell in the making. In comparison, Teresa Heinz-Kerry's purported extremism might make Senator Hillary Clinton appear more moderate to the American mainstream, particularly if Senator Clinton were to criticize Heinz-Kerry for her support of hoodlums.

In another story making the media rounds, NYC and Boston are receiving the first fresh stocks of chemical warfare antidotes or "chem packs" in advance of the Republican and Democratic conventions - Understandably, this has raised some concerns. Mind you, there haven't been any credible threats against either political convention. However, authorities well know that NYC continues to be a prime target for al-Qaeda terrorists. And, of course, al-Qaeda has been unequivocal in its desire to attack on American soil again.

Federal authorities have reportedly been proactive, scouting communities that are thought to harbor terror cells. Counterterrorism experts have helped prepare NYC for myriad threats, including those as rudimentary as car or truck bombs. The price tag for the extraordinary security associated with the GOP convention is said to exceed 75 million dollars. According to a recent New York Times piece, "The security around Madison Square Garden will include shutting down major Midtown streets for several hours each day, ringing the arena with concrete barriers and allowing demonstrators to gather only at one corner of the site, measures that officials acknowledge will disrupt large swaths of Manhattan. But Madison Square Garden is not the only concern. Because any attack in the city would probably cause the disruption sought by extremists."

Now let's focus upon the GOP shindig itself. Guest speakers slated for the convention include former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Senator John McCain (R-AZ), First Lady Laura Bush, Secretary of Education Rod Paige, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mrs. Lynne Cheney, Vice President Dick Cheney, New York Governor George Pataki, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Senator Zell Miller (D-GA). In efforts to provide the readership of GOPUSA with pivotal information regarding the GOP convention, this writer contacted convention officials in NYC. Ms.Alyssa McClenning, Deputy Press Secretary for Specialty Projects with the 2004 Republican National Convention, graciously consented to be interviewed:

Q: Can GOP Convention Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bill Harris provide our readers with the latest update on convention matters?

A: We're just over two months out and all plans are on the way to being finalized. The excitement and momentum is building to deliver one of the finest national conventions ever for President Bush.

Q: Why was NYC the best choice for the 2004 Republican convention?

Teresa Heinz-Kerry and her husband John Kerry have no shame. They're blatantly manipulating this election in any manner possible.
