Real debate between vice presidential candidates in Ohio tonight

The vice presidential candidates' debate tonight between Republican Vice President Dick Cheney and Democrat Sen. John Edwards, touted by the mass media as a possible pivot point in the presidential election, is missing a vital component -- four other candidates for the same office.

Because several candidates were excluded from the "official" debate, there will actually be two debates between vice presidential candidates tonight in Cleveland, Ohio.

Libertarian Richard Campagna, Pat LaMarche of the Green Party, Ralph Nader's independent running mate Peter Camejo, and Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party all plan to take part in a debate for "third parties" in the Kleist Center at Baldwin Wallace College, at 7 p.m.

These candidates were denied the opportunity to join Cheney and Edwards in their debate at Case Western University tonight, also in Cleveland.

Students at Baldwin Wallace College organized the third party debate, saying it will offer a stark contrast to the watered-down and scripted banter expected from the Edwards-Cheney debate taking place the same night.

The Kleist Center auditorium is expected to be a packed house, said Chris Glassburn, a student government senator at the college who helped organize the event. The center will hold approximately 500, and there are no more seats available.

In addition to students and others interested in hearing the debate, the event is also drawing significant local media coverage -- with local radio, television and newspaper reporters having confirmed they will attend, Glassburn said.

The debate is unusual not only because so many diverse viewpoints will be represented, but also because of its format. All questions for the candidates will come from Baldwin College students.

Following the hour-and-a-half-long debate, there will be an intermission, after which the debate participants and audience will watch a live broadcast of the staged, exclusive "debate" between Edwards and Cheney. At approximately 10:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the Edwards-Cheney exchange, the four vice presidential candidates gathered at Baldwin Wallace College will offer their rebuttals to the major party candidates' speeches.

Glassburn said.

"Baldwin Wallace students are proud to sponsor an event of this caliber, which will give voters an opportunity to hear all voices -- the essence of a true democracy," he said. "We're excited to share this experience with our students, with the local community and with the entire nation as well."

hmmm wouldnt it be nice if the two members of the republicratic party had enough balls to answer questions unrehearsed directly from the amrican people and not from some yellow hack that they got the questions from 6 weeks ago and have been rehearsing the answers to ever since

to bad the republicratic party is only interested in consolidating power and not supporting a democracy or even a representative republic

Edwards will use the same techniques that he employed when swaying small town juries in slip-and-fall cases. This will be effective with the gullible people already intent on voting for him.

Cheney will play up the surly grandpa routine which will also play well to the base. I think ultimately Edwards will damage himself by pushing his empty friend-of-the-women and children themes and swing voters will note the insincereity and gravitate to the surly grandpa schtick. My prediction-Edwards loses while Cheney just has to lay back and watch.

and one of the main reasons they recieve such low vote counts is becasue a vast majority of the voters dont get a chance to hear thier views because they are cut off from access to the amrica people through the nationally televised debates by the media and the two wings of the republicratic party.Most voters dont get a chanceto know that there is a second political party they can choose from such as libertarians or greens or constitution party so they just tune out and dont bother showing up for election day or they hold thier noses and vote for the one person of the single republicrat party that more closly matches some off thier views.If george w bush was really the lord and savior of america that most members of freerepublic seem to think he is he would have demanded that the other partys be allowed in the debates out of a basic sence of fairness to the american people and to the democratic republic that the president is suppose to support and protect.

i agree that is probably the way the debate will go because edwards really wont be able to do anything else but fall back on his sway the juror routine ive seen him try to add lib and be more like a politician then a lawyer and he falls flat every time

The 4 party debate (of minor party VP candidates)does raise the question: "If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there, does it make a sound?"

These parties would do well to really support their LOCAL and STATE level candidates and work for their causes on a gradual, step-by-step basis, just as the NRA has done for years. The NRA has done a tremendous job without ever running a candidate for president.

I personally ran as a Libertarian Candidate for Ohio State Representative in 2000 (and even I could not bring myself for the Libertarian Extremist presidential candidate, Harry Brown. I went to see him and listened to his positions and then I proudly VOTED FOR GEORGE W. BUSH.

I still have a great difficulty voting for the RINO's like Senator DeWine and Senator Voinovich, or Governor Bob Taft, but I will PROUDLY VOTE FOR GEORGE W. BUSH and DICK Cheney. These Guys are GOOD!

Yeah well...I had to put up with a host of 'third party' nobodies sucking up good air time with their idiotic crap in the recent CA recall election.

Huffington, Camejo and some other weasel I've forgotten were for some reason included in all the televised debates. From their collective performance, it's easy to see why they could never gain a significant constituency on their own merits.

None of these fringe candidates could ever attract enough votes to justify burdening the voting public with their moronic political and social ramblings.

I wish the students the best of luck in getting any coherent thoughts out of this bunch.
