Letter from Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito
Letter | Oct 8, 2004 | Shelley Moore Capito

Posted on 10/18/2004 2:13:39 PM PDT by WVNan

Dear xxxxxx:

Thank you for contacting my office regarding the Federal Election Integrity Act. It was good to hear your views on this issue.

The integrity of the electoral process is at the center of successful democracy. Congressman Henry Hyde introduced HR 4530, the Federal Election Integrity Act to ensure that only American citizens are voting in Federal elections. The bill would require that state governments check photo ID during both registration and at polling places. Currently, HR 4530 is pending in the House Judiciary Committee.

The Federal Paper Ballot Act should the bill come to the floor of the House for a vote, you can be sure I will keep your views in mind.

Again, thank you for contacting my office. I look forward to hearing from you again soon. It is an honor to serve you.

Sincerely, Shelley Moore Capito, M.C.

Sounds to me like we need to give the Judiciary Committee a little push on this. I had no idea this bill was even pending. It should have been out there a year ago.

Wow! I am so glsd that you posted this. I have been wondering why we don't do this for a long time. I walk into my polling location and not one iota of proof is required for me to vote. Obviously, my name is on the books and I tell them and they look for me. I then "sign on the dotted line".

My brother once asked why it was a big deal. He had never thought that someone could come in ahead of me and claim to be me and vote...and vote wrong, I might add. I'd then come in later and be challenged, thus starting a mess and delaying counting. He had never thought of that.

I think the voter's registration card should be the requirement. I even say no to a driver's license.

Nothing will happen on this over the remainder of the year. It will die with the 108th Congress, in January 2005. It will have to be reintroduced and start the process all over again.

Hopefully, there will be enough outrages over the upcoming election that the people will demand some action. But, don't bet on it.

So, it's up to us to make enough noise to get it done.
