TV Ads Advocate 'Amend for Arnold' (Barf Alert!)
LA Times ^ | 11/13/04 | Robert Salladay

SACRAMENTO — Television ads supporting a constitutional amendment that would allow Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other foreign-born citizens to run for president will begin appearing next week on cable stations across California, a newly formed group based in Silicon Valley announced Friday.

The ads feature Lissa Morgenthaler-Jones, a mutual fund manager from the Bay Area and major donor to Schwarzenegger's campaign, telling viewers: "You cannot choose the land of your birth. You can choose the land you love."

It's the first large-scale effort to generate public support for allowing Schwarzenegger to run for president. The Republican governor, who was born in Austria, has said he would be interested in running if the law allowed him, but Article 2 of the U.S. Constitution requires presidents to be "natural born" citizens. He has not actively pushed the subject, but others have.

"Twelve million people have chosen America. Now America wants to choose them," the TV ads say, referring to the number of naturalized citizens. "Help us amend the Constitution…. Help us amend for Arnold."

Morgenthaler-Jones is helping finance the effort and already has a website — http://www.amendfor arnold.com — supporting Schwarzenegger and others who might qualify. Her group said the ads will run on cable TV in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Sacramento, Stockton and Los Angeles starting Monday. The size of the ad purchase was unclear.

The group has an uphill job: Public opinion polls show weak support for changing the Constitution to accommodate Schwarzenegger. Congress recently held its first hearing on the subject since the 1870s but did not advance any of the four proposals circulating to amend the Constitution. If Congress did approve the measure, 38 states also would have to ratify it.

Blue state fluff! THAT state (CA) needs to attend to it's own business and quit trying to amend the US Constitution.

IMO, Bill Clinton would have a better chance of getting
the Amendment limiting Presidents to two terms rescinded
before a foreign-born citizen ascends to the White House.

I have been trying to convince people that Arnold is only out for his own interests, much like Kerry is. This should not even be in the works. If he really had the countrys interests in mind he wouldn't even consider this amendment. Bad for the country and impossible to pull off. I don't think he will be re-elected, or at least I hope not. He has made things worse in CA not better.

And by the way, Arnold is supposed be a republican but I see very litte evidence of it. I think he only went republican because he knew he stood the best chance of winning the re-call that way. He has also said that, and this is not a direct quote but close enough, Everyone needs someone to tell them what to do. I guess we know who Arnold thinks is the guy to tell us!!

Better get to work now to stop even the hint of this before 2008, only because we dont know who will be nominated candidate and how far the GOP will carry this.

They were very much for this during the campaign, remember?

Sure. Why not. It's about time they start talking about making Vicente Fox the President anyway, isn't it?

Or how about Jaques Chirac?

Excuse me, but Arnold is the one who originaly suggested this in an interview during the presidential election campaign when he was asked if he would run for president and he repied that he would like to get the constitution changed so he could run. He is not going to come out against it because he is behind it.

"It's the first large-scale effort to generate public support for allowing Schwarzenegger to run for president."

It doen't even rate as "wishful thinking".

Isn't going to happen.

If Arnold were able to run for president, Kah-lee-for-nee-ya would vote republican for both his election and re-election. He's as popular as Reagan here in the Golden State. Don't know how fast 38 states would ratify the change, however.
