Larsen: UN is neither anti-Israel nor anti-Semitic
By GREER FAY CASHMAN

While conceding that relations between Israel and the United Nations are troublesome, Terje Roed-Larsen, whose five-year term as Middle East envoy, is adamant that the UN is neither anti-Israel nor anti-Semitic.

Speaking at Tel Aviv University on Wednesday, Larsen said the UN is usually accused of being anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic but UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has been unequivocal in fighting anti-Semitism and declaring that Israel's existence must be safeguarded.

Larsen also denied that he personally was in anyway guilty of demonizing Israel.

"I don't think there are any grounds to say that I am demonizing Israel, quite the opposed," Larsen said.

Former foreign minister Moshe Arens took exception to what he termed Israel's "inferior position at the UN."

Israel, he said, has second or third class status and is the only nation that is prevented from being a member of the UN Security Council and other UN forums.

The UN has committed many mistakes said opposition leader Shimon Peres, "but a world without the UN would be a great mistake."

Both Peres and Larsen noted that it was a UN resolution that led to the partition of Palestine and the creation of the State of Israel.

UN is neither anti-Israel nor anti-Semitic.

No, of course not. Neither is al-Jazeera

The UN has committed many mistakes said opposition leader Shimon Peres, "but a world without the UN would be a great mistake."

Proof that Mr. Peres should never again be allowed to be Prime Minister.

I see. So it's just a decades-long practical joke. They don't really mean it.

Precisely. They will show us how much they love us and send us lovely flowers and wreaths... right after we are annihilated. The U.N. will lament our destruction and shed many crocodile tears.

"but a world without the UN would be a great mistake."

Unfortunate wording. Try: "A world without the UN would be without a great mistake."

Next thing you know, the UN is going to criticize the US for Iraqi oil sales since 2003. /sarcasm My loathing for the UN know no bounds. I will not say what I wish on the UN (and enabling presstitutes) for the literally millions that have suffered under its charter...

"The UN is Neither anti-Israel nor anti-Semitic" "Terje Roed-Larsen, whose five-year term as Middle East envoy, is adamant that the UN is neither anti-Israel nor anti-Semitic. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Puleeeeeze, Mr. Larsen, I like the one about the three bears better. I guess he hasn't been reading all the UN resolutions about Israel for the past 50 years.

"Former foreign minister Moshe Arens took exception to what he termed Israel's "inferior position at the UN." Israel, he said, has second or third class status and is the only nation that is prevented from being a member of the UN Security Council and other UN forums."

Mr. Arens is right. But I suppose Larsen didn't check the UN history to see how Israel has been kept off the UN SC and various other committees.

"The UN has committed many mistakes said opposition leader Shimon Peres, "but a world without the UN would be a great mistake."

Oh good night, nurse! The world would be better without the UN. Whatever was the original intent, purpose and usefulness of the UN when it was created in 1945, it has long become about as useful as its sorry predecessor, the League of Nations between WW 1 and WW 2.

The U.N> has never helped the cause of helping democracies like Israel in the middle east. Time to get rid of the U.N.

I can't agree. The U.N. is far more dangerous and damaging than the League of Nations ever was.

...3. Israel is the only member-state in the U.N. that is prevented from belonging to a regional grouping and is, therefore, prevented from participating in much of the ordinary work of the U.N. Israel cannot vote for or be elected to many of the U.N.'s central organizations. For this reason, Israel cannot be elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. This situation violates the principle of the "sovereign equality of all Member states" of the UN, under the UN Charter (Article 2).

...5. The Commission on Human Rights routinely adopts totally disproportionate resolutions concerning Israel. Of all condemnations of this agency, 26 percent refer to Israel alone, while rogue states such as Syria and Libya are never criticized. The special rapporteur assigned by the commission to the territories was given a mandate very different from that of any other special rapporteur.

...In addition, anti-Semitism as a phenomenon has long been ignored or deliberately omitted in resolutions, forums and events throughout the UN, even in commemorations of World War II. It was only on 24 November 1998, 50 years since the UN's founding, that the word "anti-Semitism" was first mentioned in a UN resolution, appearing near the end of GA Res. A/53/623, "Elimination of Racism and Racial Discrimination."

9. The U.N. has repeatedly held Emergency Special Sessions of the General Assembly on Israeli construction in Jerusalem. The Emergency Special Session was originally conceived in 1950 for emergencies like the Korean War. In the last 15 years, these special meetings have only been held regarding Israel. Emergency Special Sessions were not convened over the genocide in Rwanda, ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia, or with regard to the other major world conflicts.

No argument from me there. My comment in saying it was about as useful as the old League of Nations was to show my personal scorn for the UN.

The UN may not be but all the members are.

I think you mean most, not all. Israel and the U.S. are not. Several south Pacific island nations allied with the U.S. and Australia always vote with Israel. Recently Australia under John Howard has started voting more with Israel.

Let's not be unjust to the United States or such important nations as Kiribati, Pelau, and Nauru :)

Shame on you!!!

You all forgot Micronesia!!! Their population is 135,869 poeple, and they always vote for Israel at the UN!

May God bless Micronesia!

P.S Micronesia, unlike Europe, is not scared of the Muslims, because they cant reach her islans :)

Also, I am sure that such a progressive, honorable and respected institution as the UN, simply cannot be anti-semitic or anti-Israeli! The UN doesnt like Jews and Israelis, thats all! Right Mr. Peres? (Sarcasm)

UN = Unwanted Nobodies? or perhaps, UN = UNtisemitic?
-Forget about it, its both!
