Sorry to rain on your thread. I remember a time when we were all required to learn the King's English. The English do not seem to learn the King's English these days.
"Bad grammar will give the people impression you are ignorant" is one of my favorite Mom lines. It gets the obligatory eye roll, but it is true.

The Times is a Rupert Murdoch rag. He is the guy who owns Fox News btw. People who want serious news read the Financial Times or the Telegraph.
He also owns the Sun, the first newspaper to print naked pictures of women on a daily basis.
