MSNBC ^ | Feb. 16, 2005 | AP

More than a year after Sarah Nome was deemed healthy and given her discharge papers, the 82-year-old woman stubbornly refuses to leave her hospital bed.

Nome admits there is no reason she should be racking up unpaid medical bills — which have now topped $1 million - but says she has nowhere else to turn.

Now Kaiser Permanente’s San Rafael Medical Center in California is suing her for the cost of her stay and trying to show her the door.

I'm speechless.

I also did a search and didn't find this, so apologies if already posted.

I am sure a lot of people think the old woman should be able to stay as long as she wants. I bet these same people bitch about the high cost of health care!

Its crazy. She has a daughter - can't she stay with her?

And for $1 million ... just damn. She could've bought a house with that. Freeloading idiot.

Only in california. Give her mop and bucket, maybe she'll leave . I can't believe they can legally remove her.

Really?
Where would they put her? On the sidewalk? An 82 year old woman? That would be real good PR for the Sherrif and the hospital.

They are stuck. What a difficult situation!

Slip her a sedative and let her wake up under an overpass with the other deadbeats and freeloaders.

Uh, so the hospital is charging her for unnecessary medical care?

The daughter sounds like a gem ; Leaving her bedridden mother in the hospital like that.

This story sounds more like a stradegy in a lawsuit than anything else. Something fishy about all this. There has to be more here than what is being told.

This is interesting. I thought people cannot just "stay" in a hospital at their own request. I thought a physician must order it and the hospital must approve it.

Do they just keep feeding her meals? Since she isn't being treated for anything, does she just stay in bed? Does she walk around?

Perhaps they could move her bed to the boiler room.

Yes, I'm aware of that. I'm saying that if she was going to take the taxpayers/healthcare consumers for $1 mill, we could've just collectively given her the million and had her set for the rest of her life instead of shacking her up in a hospital room for a year.

No, they are charging her for room, board and being checked on. They still have to have a nurse keep an eye on her and a doctor has to check on her when he makes his rounds. None of that is cheap

I was waiting for the first stupid "only in Calif" bash on this one......can't you think of anything different. We already had this argument earlier......all kinds of stupid sh** happen every day in every state, and we don't say, "ah, only in (fill in the blank)......tell me what state you are from and I'll come up with some good ones for you........

Ok, here's the deal. You can pay me a million dollars and I promise I won't go stay in the hospital for a year. I WILL take your deal.

Oh, don't be so hypersensitive. We all know the two states with the biggest number of dupes, scammers, cons, and frauds are where you and I live.

Bronson Hospital in Michigan is $1,459 a day just for the room so that sounds about right.
