WASHINGTON - Progress for America Voter Fund launched a powerful new ad challenging Democrats to present plans to reform and save Social Security. The ad is entitled "Stopwatch" and began running today in a national cable television buy costing $1 million.

This 30 second ad will run for approximately 1 ½ weeks on national cable channels, complimented by a grassroots program designed to educate lawmakers and the public about proposed changes that are necessary to save and strengthen the Social Security program.

The ad is part of a $4.85 million March media and grassroots campaign that includes radio ads, local TV ads ("Graph"), national TV ads ("Iceberg" and "Stopwatch"), phones calls and an aggressive grassroots drive in 24 states, all timed to reach Members of Congress during the period of time they will be in their home districts and states.

"Stopwatch" Audio Script:
AUDIO (Music Up & Under)

ANNCR: President Bush wants to rescue Social Security. He asked for all ideas to be put on the table. Can you think of any ideas that national Democrats have offered? Go.

(SFX = click - ticking stop watch)

(10 seconds elapses with only the sound of the clicking stop watch)

(SFX = click as stopwatch stops)

ANNCR: Democrats have… no solutions on Social Security. None. Tell Congress that Social Security is too important for partisan games.

PFA is the leader of a number of outside groups that are engaged on the issue. They started the year with $9 million in the bank and plan to spend $20 million on this issue.

"Reform includes making tough choices - choices that will only become tougher if we put off action. Rather than simply oppose every principled idea, Democrats need to sit down at the table with the President now and present their own plans - for the sake of our children and grandchildren's futures," said Brian McCabe, President of Progress for America.

And AARP just unveiled their attack ad to counter this. Looks like Dingy Harry called his toadies at the AARP and told them they better start providing air support for Dim's footdragging or their might end up being Social Security reform after all. The AARP ad parrots the fraudulent claim about W's reforms costing trillions and cutting benefits by 40%. (They don't mention that those are the outcomes we are expecting by 2040 just as things stand and that there isn't actually a plan proposed by W.)
