Ummm...because public school education just generally sucks for about a hundred reasons?

Then why entrust them to the PUBLIC SCHOOL BAND TEACHER?!

As a homeschool parent I would FULLY agree with this statement. However, these parents have the right (via their taxes) to utilize any resources within the public school system - including marching band if the child is musically capable.

You asked: " Then why entrust them to the PUBLIC SCHOOL BAND TEACHER?!"

Because she plays the clarinet really well and she enjoys playing with the band? And she's a resident of the school district and she and her parents are tax-paying citizens of the United States?

Hey, do I get a Master of the Obvious Award too??

Then why entrust them to the PUBLIC SCHOOL BAND TEACHER?!

Two reasons:

1. It's not likely that two hours of band practice will substantially affect your homeschooler's world view, and

2. It's difficult for a homeschooler to assemble the warm bodies and the equipment to field a marching band, and unwarranted when you're already paying the county to do it for you.

There are, in fact, things that public schools do better than homeschoolers...pretty much anything that involves large numbers of people and large sums of money. The public-school reaction to wall homeschoolers off from such resources is simple spite.

Music is more of a technical discipline than a cognitive one. The disciplines of mastering your instrument, and the music, and your position in the band, are wholesome. Marinating in liberal "socialist studies" is not.
