Confronting right-wing hysteria [Linda Foley's Non-Apology]
The Newspaper Guild ^ | June 17, 2005 | Linda Foley, President

Linda Foley's Screed +fake apology

Note to the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy (or whatever you’re calling yourselves these days): I was just re-elected president of The Newspaper Guild-CWA, and I’m not resigning.

That said, let me address the rest of this column to the people who really matter: the members of The Newspaper Guild.

In case you missed it, for about a month I have been subjected to what I would characterize as a right-wing screed over some comments I made at the National Media Reform Conference in St. Louis on May 13. The comments (which I won’t repeat here) were about journalists getting killed in Iraq and criticized how the U.S. military has dealt with those deaths.

[She won't but I will: "“Journalists, by the way, are not just being targeted verbally or …ah, or… ah, politically. They are also being targeted for real, um…in places like Iraq. What outrages me as a representative of journalists is that there’s not more outrage about the number, and the brutality, and the cavalier nature of the U.S. military toward the killing of journalists in Iraq.”

“They target and kill journalists…uh, from other countries, particularly Arab countries like Al -, like Arab news services like Al-Jazeera, for example. They actually target them and blow up their studios with impunity…"]

If I made a mistake, it was in trying to cover the issues surrounding safety for journalists in Iraq in an off-the-cuff way. I regret that my in-artful phraseology, and the storm it incited on the right, may detract from a critically important issue for journalists, especially those who cover war.

Linda Foley, President of the Newspaper Guild has issued a screed wrapped around some kind of fake apology. Just like Eason Jordan she accused the US Military of killing journalists in Iraq.

Her inability to fathom people's disgust astounds me.

If you have comments to share with Ms. Foley she can be reached at:

When I first began reading this article, I had to double-check to make sure that it wasn't a parody.

In reading her comments above, I don't see anything "in-artful" about them. They appear to be premeditated. She's just mad because she got called on it.

Just another America-hating hag.

That’s why I hope Americans who actually care about democratic discourse and public debate will support independent, fact-based journalism and professional journalists who strive to practice it. Please refrain from attacking reporters who are trying to get to the truth. Focus instead on re-creating a media climate where a future Woodward & Bernstein can investigate abuse and speak truth to power without fear of government retribution or an orchestrated deluge of hate mail calling for their demise.

Pass the bucket!

The Newspaper Guild is a left-wing labor union, and it shares the same treacherous motives as all its "brother" unions.

"Austin Bay's Reply"?
Where'd you get that? It looks to me like Hiawatha Bray wrote the reply.
It's a good one too!

Moral confusion is being pedaled by the MSM! They make far out accusations, can't support them, fail to retract them, then apologize if you misunderstood them and apologize further for you being offending.

That's moral confusion!
That's Linda Foley, president of the reporters union.

ThirstyMan

Allow me to take this opportunity as an object lesson in how to admit a mistake and make a proper apology:

Dear ThirstyMan,

You are correct. I mislabled the post as Austin Bay when it clearly should have been labled "Hiawatha Bray." I was wrong and for that I am sorry. Thank you for taking the time to point out the error. I will try to be more attentive when I post in the future.

With sincere regards,
dung.

Well done dung! You stated what the mistake was. You accepted responsibility for the mistake and you assured me that you'd try not to make that same mistake again. Nice!

Your sincere and "proper apology" is accepted. : )

Liberal journalists tend to use exhibitionism as a means to usurp the rights of others. Witness such an example in the above article. Pathetic. Journalistic "endeavors" should trump winning a war? Ask certain liberal journalists. Pathetic.

Just who is this watery tot again ? President of the Newspaper Guild ? Ya would think she would know that was Hillary who used that term.

The more she talks the more support she drums up for actually targeting the press in Iraq if we ever actually wanted to do that.

Is it not ironic that she fears the US military more than say Saddams forces ?
