Heavenly Father,

Your goodness and mercy amaze us! You hear our prayers and ease our burdens even as we fall short of the mark You have set before us. Your faithfulness and steadfastness are an anchor in our storm-tossed lives. Your peace that passes understanding is a buoy that lifts us up. We confess our sinfulness to You, O Father, and accept Your forgiveness, bought with the precious blood of the Lamb. Guide our steps that we may serve You, O Lord.

We praise You, O Lord, for sending us such a man as George W. Bush to lead our nation in these troubling times. Though he is imperfect, his sincerity shines through. We are grateful that he is one who seeks Your will and who studies Your word. Let Your wisdom dwell within him and keep him humble, knowing that his strength comes from You. We thank You for our First Lady, a woman of character and grace, and for the example our First Couple set for our young people through their devotion to You and to one another. Keep them under the shadow of Your wings, protecting them from all who wish them harm.

Father, our President is a man who finds joy in encouraging others and building them up. His enemies, our enemies, are the type who seek to destroy either through word or deed. The terrorists desire to impose their will on others through bombings and brutality and fear. But many in our own country, even in our government and the media, thrive on tearing down reputations and trying to ruin the good names of those with whom they differ. They use lies and deceit to try to garner power for themselves. They dishonor the great institutions of our society -- family, the judiciary and other branches of our government, the church. Lord, it is obvious that the War on Terror is but one battle being waged in our times. A great war for the hearts and minds and souls of our citizens is ongoing. Father, we fight against the rulers of darkness and we must turn to You for the spiritual armor and weapons we need. We claim the victory that You have already won and we ask for increased faith that we might see Your might and Your glory all around us. We throw ourselves upon Your mercy, asking that You send Your Holy Spirit throughout our land, quickening hearts that have grown cold and dead to Your Word. Let truth, honor, and integrity once more reign in America. Thwart those who seek to tear down our nation and restore in us a desire to please You and seek Your will.

Lord, we earnestly pray for Your protection for our troops and for all the first responders in our nation who give up much in order to serve our people. Help us to find ways not only to feel our appreciation for them but to show them our gratitude for their sacrifices. Bless them and encourage them and their families. We ask all these things in the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. - Phil. 4:6

The LORD is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
When evil men advance against me
to devour my flesh, [a]
when my enemies and my foes attack me,
they will stumble and fall.

Though an army besiege me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then will I be confident.

One thing I ask of the LORD,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to seek him in his temple.

Amen.
