CHICAGO An Illinois pharmacist says he's being pressured by the state to sell a certain kind of oral contraceptive despite his objection to it for moral reasons.
A new rule in Illinois the first of its kind in the United States tells pharmacists that if they're in the business of selling contraceptives, they must fill all contraceptive prescriptions, including those for so-called "morning-after" birth-control pills.

Next bill: Best Buy forced to sell 61 inch plasma TVs?
lets make it fair. force a christian to sell kill pills, force a muslim to sell pork that he has to touch.
since when is the gov't allowed to tell people what they HAVE to sell. maybe if the gov't was paying this guy, but no other way.
As usual, the "Freedom of Choice" crowd denies others (in this case, the pharmacist) THEIR choice.
Big Brother anyone? Now just imagine the reaction the lefties would have if a gun store owner were forced to sell any kind of gun that was requested.
"since when is the gov't allowed to tell people what they HAVE to sell."
There are a million and a half ways the government can tell him what to do via all sorts of licenses, zonings, etc. You seem to be under the mistaken idea that we live in a free country and that you actually own your property.
He should agree to sell it.
Just keep none in stock; say he'll special order it.
Send the order by U.S. Mail, pay by check (which will take 3-4 days to clear), and pay for 3rd class shipping.
They can have the morning after pill in 10-14 days, if all goes right. Certainly no longer than 30 days.
Notice how they call RU-486 a contraceptive. It's not a contraceptive if it induces an early child murder. And the governor of Illinois says he doesn't want women to be "hassled." Never mind about the rights of pharmacists.
Government can regulate the sale of products by requiring licenses and such to sell them.
AFAIK this is the first time I have heard them tell a private business they HAVE to sell something.
I propose a law outlawing any congresscritter from talking to any lobbyist out of the public eye. All meetings with lobbyists shall be now be done over National television. Call it the "Bite me Government" bill.
I am a pharmacist and have been faced with this issue a couple of times. I'm always out of the drug. Can't get it from my wholesaler/supplier if you know what I mean. I'm glad in the "nation of choice" that pharmacists still have a choice in my state. Patients choose whether or not to have abortions. Dr's choose whether or not to perform abortions. But, some want to MAKE pharmacists assist in abortions. Where's our choice? God bless the IL pharmacists.
Right, like the ppl on this thread let people buy and sell marijuana. Oh wait..
He considers it tantamount to abortion, since it is taken after sexual intercourse and can prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus.
Vander Bleek is an idiot if he is a pharmacist and doesn't know that "regular oral contraceptives" also "can prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus." What a fool. Any hard core pro-lifer will confirm it for you. The regular pills inhibit the production of mucous or whatever it is on the uteran walls, meaning that on those occasions where the pill fails to prevent fertilization, it can still prevent pregnancy by not letting the egg attach. End of story. This guy's a nimrod.
Hey now,
check out my #13 and tell me if I am wrong.
See my #13. If you sell regular contraceptive pills, you are facilitating abortions. Congrats.
His right to be a nimrod, an idiot, and to run his business in his interests.
I agree, and I for one hope he starts fighting for his rights even though I disagree with his view.
Apparantly not according to Illinois.
I agree. I would just be in a bad habit of underordering it, and be conveniently out of stock all the time.
You're right, he's wrong, the principled position is not to sell any abortofacients and both are.
