That is so dumb! Don't they have public libraries, anyway?

No one seems willing to put a large part of the blame where it goes. The parents. You can give a kid ten books a day for his entire life and unless a parent is willing to give up their "valuable" time and sit down and read to/with them when they're little, it won't matter. If a parent has the desire to read to their kids, books can be found at any rummage/garage sale or public library.

We do three RIF distributions at school every year. Each child can choose one free book at each distribution. They seem to fall into two categories: the kids that say "How many can I have? I can't decide!!" and the ones that say "Do I HAVE to take one?"

Wow, that's quite a plan! Maybe someone should tell them that Dolly Parton already does this through her Imagination Library and it doesn't require government involvement or tax dollars. See Imagination Library.com

This was one of the things the United Way helps promote. Anyone can register their child and they are sent a book a month until they reach school age. I have bristled at a few of the books (the little engine that could is now female, others are Spanish first, English in smaller print below) but no Buster the Bunny in them!

Books are prominent in our household but my little girls really enjoy getting these in the mail each month. They have fun, we spend even more time together, and the girls build their reading skills. However, if my wife and I didn't engage in the books, no amount of free books would have much an impact with our toddler and preschooler.

I'd love to see more entertainers follow Dolly Parton's lead and really do something for the children. God bless her!

Well, that's good news.

I think I'll just sit right here doing nothing but post on Free Republic until the govt. sends me somebody to wake me up in the morning, be sure I brush my teeth, comb my hair, wear clean (appropriate for the weather) clothes, get to work on time, work, exercise, not eat any "bad" food, meditate, walk everywhere I go so I don't contribute to global warming, not smoke, not drink, not ingest any unecessary drugs, and watch what I post on Free Re......oops, gone.

ROTFLOL. Good point.

And whatever happened to the library? There's plenty of free books to read there and when you're done, just take them back; they don't sit around cluttering up your house. And there's an unlimited supply. Sheesh.

With numerous studies confirming that the earlier children start learning, the better they do in later years,...

So how did the human race survive all these years? And where did so many men of genius come from all these hundreds and thousands of years without the current public education system? To hear them spout off, you'd think they were the salvation of mankind. I have news for them.....

For those who do not follow Indiana politics, Democrats constitute about one out of every three people in the state senate. The likelihood of any Democrat proposal on anything being adopted varies between slim and none. [Much closer to the none than slim.]

Most important feature in a child learning to read is a parent willing to read to them .

Yes this is so funny. I guess kids will just more clutter in their already filled with toys rooms...There is no way kids will read these books. Oh what is the subject matter of the books going to be. "Mommy had an abortion today" and the book will explain how to express you feelings about it and try to be understanding about what Mommy just went through. Oh Gosh, I just gave the rats an idea...Damn. This is too funny. I am dying of laughter at what books they will be giving out.
