Check Out Free FileSeventy percent of the nation's taxpayers are eligible for free tax preparation software and free electronic filing. See if you are eligible.
Whoever said there is no such thing as a free lunch may have been right. But for millions of eligible taxpayers, with an Adjusted Gross Income of $50,000 or less, there is Free File. Free File is online tax preparation and electronic filing through a partnership agreement between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, LLC. In other words, you can e-file... free. |
Need additional time to file your tax return? Several companies offer free e-filing of Form 4868, Automatic Extension of Time to File. All taxpayers qualify. No restrictions.
Before Getting Started...
A few points are worth noting. For instance:
- Free File is a free service offered by companies for taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $50,000 or less.
- Carefully review the free offer descriptions before starting your return. Individual company offers may be limited to specific states and income levels. Additional fees may apply for state tax return preparation services.
- Each company has a description of their eligibility criteria for preparing and e-filing your federal tax return for free.
- When choosing a company, be sure to link to the company's web site through IRS.gov. By going directly to a company's web site, you may not get the free service.
- You are under no obligation to buy any products or services.
- Telephone filing (Telefile) is no longer available. Many taxpayers who used this telephone service in the past may qualify to use Free File.

Thought this might benefit some folks. If your AGI is under $50,000 you might be able to file online and e-file all for free via reputable companies like Intuit (TurboTax), H&R Block, etc.

You mean 'lesser achievers' like my husband, who serves our country in the US Navy yet does not make the requisite $50,000/year?

*chuckles* Oh, look at the lovely sarcasm. Isn't that CUTE?
No really, xrp. I didn't know you were talking about us. We 'lesser achievers' aren't mind readers, you know.
*bows* with that, I must depart for now. Have a nice day :)

Lesser achievers? What is there to achieve?
Some people make under 50k per year because they are either seniors, students, single and in middle class income jobs, unable to work for health reason, any number of reasons.
I don't understand your post, it sounds like engaging in class warfare (?)
Why can't tax returns be free? Anyone can get paper copies of forms online or at a library for free, submit it for free, and get a refund if qualified. I do my own. The one time I did pay someone (H&R BLOCK), they screwed it up so bad I was paying penalties out the wazoo because they refused to.
I don't understand your post. Free is okay in my book.

The automatic extension obtained by filing Form 4868 is good for six months beginning this year. In prior years, the automatic extension was good for four months, and a taxpayer could obtain an additional extension of two months by filing Form 2688 and stating a good reason. The IRS decided to allow taxpayers who file an automatic extension request a six month extension to file their individual income tax returns to reduce the expense of processing the second extension requests. So, this year if you obtain an automatic extension by filing Form 4868, you will have until October 15 to file your individual income tax return. You must file the extension request by the regular filing due date of April 17. The deadline is two days later this year because April 15 is on a Saturday. Taxpayers in a few states have until April 18 because of the observance of Patriot Day.
