Mamallapuram (or Mahabalipuram as it is more commonly known) was a leading center of South Indian culture. Once a thriving seaport and trade junction, the city was swallowed by the sea and most of its archeological marvels lie under water now. The famous shore temple at this place is only one of the seven that still survives. The other six are submerged off the coast.

A beautiful place with lots of history; marine archeology should be able to provide more glimpses into this once-thriving seaport.

Incidentally, the old Roman-Indian trade ports are also located close to this area.
