U.S. Warns Venezuela on Thuggish Activity

WASHINGTON, Apr. 10, 2006 (AP) The Bush administration may severely restrict the movements of Venezuela's ambassador if pro-government activists in Venezuela engage in any more "thuggish" activities against U.S. Ambassador William Brownfield, a spokesman said Monday.

There have been four incidents of harassment directed at Brownfield in recent weeks, including one last Friday when his convoy was pelted with eggs, tomatoes and other food. The convoy was also pummeled by motorcyclists during a miles-long chase through Caracas.

"If we see an incident like this again, I think that there are going to be serious diplomatic consequences between our two countries. And I think that the Venezuelan ambassador might find his ability to move around the United States severely restricted," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

Another official said the administration may take steps to prevent Ambassador Bernardo Alvarez from leaving the grounds of his residence here. The official asked not to be identified because the issue is still under study.

In Caracas, Venezuela's top diplomat for North America, Mari Pili Hernandez, said it would be a violation of international law if the U.S. put restrictions on Alvarez's travels.

Do normal nations need to be warned time and again about "thuggish activity"?

Why does Hugo Chavez constantly need to be reminded?

I thought the way it worked was that if someone on the diplomatic staff got roughed up then there was a retaliation in the victim's country against the offending countries corps.

Kind of like old time hockey...

I think we ought to just yank their shopping visas. Chavistas are stealing left and right and trying to spend it all on mirrored sunglasses, just like Dannyboy Ortega once did. Yank those visas and watch them writhe.

One of these days he'll step across the invisible line, and he'll find himself trading old presidential palace stories with his new friend, Manuel Noriega, for the rest of his life.

Sadly, Noriega gets out for good behavior next year. I hope Hugo gets his used bunk and bedding, in which case.

For starters, yank their diplomatic plates and see how they like having to park legally in New York and DC.

A lot of us with relatives in Northern South America are very much worried about this maniacal piece of garbage.

I predict that the liberals have bit off the another Castro wannabe.

This guy is more dangerous than Castro because he has billions of dollars worth of oil at his disposal and he is on a giant ego trip.
