Voluntary military service is usually a pretty strong indication of selflessness.

A single mother is, obviously, a mother who is single.

I.e. a woman who is raising children and is not married.

The vast majority of single mothers really do wish that there were a responsible husband and father in the family.

It is a rare single mother indeed who will turn down a serious marriage proposal from a normal man.

Aside from the fact that this "single mother" is divorced and joined the military to get off of Public assistance.....

Let's say she did have a child out of wedlock. Would she have been better off aborting her "bastard child"? What is to say the man had no intention of giving her child a father?

Then you must admit that your definition does not apply in this case, and that she is not a "single mother." The article clearly states that she was married.

We do not know the circumstances of her divorce, and considering that she is serving our nation (and will go back when asked) I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Before jumping to conclusions, you might actually pause and check that the facts are on your side. In this case, they are not.

I see. You just make up definitions of words and expect others to follow. It doesn't work that way. That's not what a "single mother" is. As far as American English usage goes, that is.

And while we're on the subject of language, the term "bastard," while technically accurate to describe a child born out-of-wedlock, is also used to describe a bad, mean person. As such, it has become a pejorative term, and I think it's cruel to call a baby a pejorative term because of it's parents that it had no control over. I see it as similar to mocking someone because of their race. Why denigrate someone over circumstances they had no control over?

And don't give me the pat answer that she is a trollop for having had sex out of wedlock. The deed was done. A child was born.
