Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes (I am speechless)

Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes

BENTON, La. – The parents of a month-old girl whose toes were gnawed off while they slept apparently disagree about whether the culprit was their ferret or their 6-week-old pit bull.

Mary Hansche, 22, told KTBS-TV on Tuesday that she thinks it was the ferret. "The way the bite marks were on her foot. The ferret being out of its cage. I knew it wasn't the dog," she said.

"We were told that the puppy had blood on its fur. But when the officers arrived there, the animal did not have blood on its mouth," he said.

Natale said which animal did it won't affect charges against the Hansches, who were booked Dec. 10 on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bond each.

[snip]

Their daughter has been released from the hospital and is in state custody.

The Hansches were asleep on a mattress on the floor and the baby in a carrier next to the mattress when her cries woke them, police have said. They were not tested for alcohol or drugs, since such tests would not be needed to prove the charges, Natale said Wednesday.

Defense attorney Pam Smart said she is waiting for results of a hair analysis to back up the couple's statement that they were not using drugs.

[snip]

She also said their bonds are too high for misdemeanors. A bond reduction hearing is scheduled next month.

Both pets were released from quarantine but will remain in the Bossier City animal shelter until the court case is over, Natale said. Either the court or the city may decide their fate, he said.

Man gotta sleep on the floor.... can't afford a wife, child, or dog. And probably isn't responsible enough to own a ferret.

Prayers for the child.

Doesn't matter which animal did it (if in fact it even was one of the animals at all), the parents are morons for not protecting their child.

Great story though for pit haters to decide it was the pit...even though the puppy was only 6 WEEKS old.

I wouldn't have guessed that this was just a misdemeanor. Insane.

My brother and I grew up with pits, and we have all of our toes and other body parts. So do all of our friends who played with our dogs. They were part of the family.

I've got pit mixes now, and the only abuse that has happened are their previous owners beating them, not them showing aggression towards humans.

They were not tested for alcohol or drugs

I could not imagine sleeping next to one of my children while they were being eaten alive and not responding.

Yes, and I have been around pitbulls and lived to tell the tale.

And so what of it? The damned things are worse than handgrenades. A handgrenade can't pull its own pin. A pitbull can and will go off for no reason at all.

I'd rather have a handgrenade in the house.

B.S.

A pit will NOT "go off" for any reason. Pits are not by nature human-aggressive.

It's a failed breed. You may have known exceptions but that doesn't alter the reality.

Failed breed?

Pit bulls have been family dogs for a long time, it wasn't until pimps and thugs co-opted the breed for their PROPENSITY (not PREDISPOSITION) to cause harm that the breed got a bad rap.

It's obvious who knows the breed and who doesn't.

They were bred due to their disposition. You disagree, fine. Why do you think they were bred then?

Pits were bred to fight OTHER DOGS, not HUMANS. And that was no fault of their own, of course.

See the difference? Pits do not target humans unless they are specifically trained to do so (as opposed to genetically disposed to do so) by crappy human beings; it is not in their genetics to be human-aggressive.
