If you've ever wondered whether God laughs, think back to 1980, when the Rev. Robert Drinan was ordered by Pope John Paul II to get out of politics and leave Congress. The Jesuit priest, who died on Sunday, was finishing his fifth term representing a suburban Boston district that included Cambridge and Brookline. The pope had been hearing from rankled conservative American Catholics--the Pat Buchanan, William F. Buckley Jr., William Bennett wing of the church -- that Father Drinan, a purebred Democrat, was a dangerous liberal. His voting record on abortion was seen as too pro-choice.
Father Drinan's presence in the House of Representatives had been sanctioned by the previous pope, Paul VI, as well as by the U.S. episcopate, the cardinal of Boston, his own Jesuit superiors and emphatically by the voters in his district.
No matter.
John Paul, knowing that Jesuits take a vow of loyalty to popes, had his way. And who replaced the dangerously liberal Father Drinan? The more dangerously liberal Barney Frank--as ardent an advocate for abortion rights and as he was for gay rights. If there is a God, the Frank-for-Drinan trade surely had Him laughing at the Vatican's expense.

McCarthy is a former columnist for the Post because he kept writing about abortion, and the sophisticates at the Post didn't want to hear anything about that subject except the lies Drinan and like-minded Democrat devils were dishing out. Wonder how much they paid McCarthy to write this sickening tribute to the priest who threw holy water on Nancy Pelosi.
Colman McCarthy is a leftist idiot.
He's got a point. Drinan out and Frank in IS a case of 'be careful what you wish for...'
Better for the wolves to be obvious than disguised as sheep.
Lotta things wrong with that sentence....
My Irish Catholic Boston born and bred Mother damn near became an Episcopalian because of that jerk. She'd be rolling over in her grave now if she had, you know with the esteemed Eugene V. Robinson and all!
"And who replaced the dangerously liberal Father Drinan? The more dangerously liberal Barney Frank--as ardent an advocate for abortion rights and as he was for gay rights. If there is a God, the Frank-for-Drinan trade surely had Him laughing at the Vatican's expense."
This says much more about Massachusetts than it does God. I'm disappointed to know that Coleman McCarthy outlived Drinan.
Robert Drinan and Barney Frank may not have been maternal twins but they were definitely fraternal twins.
I doubt either God or the Pope expected Drinan's district would elect a conservative Republican.
I guess there is a certain "irony" involved in some way, but McCarthy misses the questions inside the church involved here in a big way.
Drinan in Congress said something about the Catholic Church and Catholic America that Barney Frank doesn't say, and that's something McCarthy doesn't get.
Colman McCarthy is a spiteful little man. He especially loathes the military. He wrote some truly hateful things against our soldiers during Desert Shield/Storm. He's lived in the protective womb of tenured academia for so long that he no longer knows what he sounds like.
Oh, and he's good at mocking G-d, too.
Pope John Paul II believed in the separation of church and state, unlike this liberal. Of course, had Drinan been a real Catholic priest instead of a phony Jesuit playing dress-up, and followed the faith in opposing abortion and all manner of other abominations, I doubt McCarthy would be in his amen corner.
If the author of this article is looking for irony, it's worth noting that Drinan died about ten days after presiding over a Catholic Mass to commemorate Nancy Pelosi's election as the House speaker.
Father Drinan has gone to his judgment before God, not Colman McCarthy.
*ping*
Hey, BE, wasn't Drinan's predecessor, Phil Philbin, a Social Conservative ?
McCarthy's assertion the Pope had heard from right-wing American Catholics, and this had prompted him to act against Drinan, is utter nonsense. If Buckley, et. al., really had that kind of influence in Rome, Kennedy would have long ago been excommunicated, or, at the very least, denied Communion.
Despite what the article says, Drinan's Congressional service did not meet with universal approval by his superiors. Moreover his advocacy of abortion was so deep and thorough he publically praised Clinton for vetoing the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act. And, oh yes, Drinan, who recently died, is fondly recalled as a champion of "civil rights". One can only wonder how Father Drinan is currently explaining his lack of concern for the "civil rights" of the Innocent Ones. Might be interesting to listen in on that one.
As for Frank replacing him---so? Consider the district they both represented. With Drinan gone, Buckley and the others thought the wackos there would elect a Goldwater clone? Besides Frank and Drinan are ideological brothers, and there is nothing Frank has done Drinan wouldn't have also done, except perhaps run a male prostitution service out of his home. But then again, Drinan was so liberal it really is quite difficult to know for sure.
just another log on the eternal fire of hell.
Bob Drinan was one of the two dems I've ever voted for.
