California's GOP primary defies easy predictions

No one would have guessed who's lining up behind whom in California's GOP presidential primary contest. It's got lots of people scratching their heads.

Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York, is getting endorsements from key California conservatives despite the fact he is pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-gay rights.

Bill Simon, a dyed-in-the-wool conservative who ran an unsuccessful campaign for governor in 2002, is selling Giuliani to some of the state's most conservative leaders. Simon worked for Giuliani when he headed the U.S. Attorney's office in New York. The two were eating breakfast together in New York on the morning of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Simon's pitch is getting some traction with conservatives because they fear McCain's staunch support for sending more troops to Iraq could be an issue in the general election, and lead to a Democratic victory.

"Of the three leading Republican candidates, none are going to be ideal for conservative Republican activists," said Jon Fleischman, a state GOP party vice chair. "Everyone has to go through the process to compromise and find someone to support." Added Fleischman, who runs the conservative Web site flashreport.org, "They are willing to give Giuliani a pass on the social issues because they believe only he can beat Hillary Clinton."

Simon downplays the split he and others have with Giuliani on key social issues that in other times would have made Giuliani an anathema. Said Simon, "The most important thing for the majority of voters is the picture that emerges of Giuliani when they think of an effective leader."

"Everyone has to go through the process to compromise and find someone to support."

Makes good sense. After all, what are principles for if you don't have power? So let's all get behind Hillary Clinton, our gal for '08.

Bill Simon beat Dick Riordan by 14 points.

That doesn't say very much for Giuliani's chances once the base finds out where he stands on issues important to them.

All those words, and not one mention for Congressman Duncan Hunter. Figured someone should mention him, since he's from California...

Why waste the money and time. The socialists and illegal aliens own Califonrnia. Only thing left to concretely accomplish is to hire more moochers to service all the new moochers coming to the golden state.

Throwing another wrinkle in conventional campaigning, Sundheim is pushing for decline-to-state voters to participate in the GOP primary... Sundheim, a moderate Republican, said he worries that as the number of decline-to-state voters grow, Republicans are losing a chance to get independent voters behind their candidates in the primary and they may not support the GOP primary winner come November.

Dufus is always there trying to undermine conservatives, and the party, to advance his liberal agenda.

Here's one of the best discussions/summations of what should and should not be "the sole of the Republican Party," I've seen lately!!!

Oh, c'mon... Read it! You'll like it!!! Sincerely...

For best results, read all the way to the end, including the source material... Everytime we compromise with liberalism, their slippery slope just gets steeper for us, not them!!! We should only except complete and total victory whenever possible and nothing less!!!

Anything less is a complete waste of our time and mental energy. We can do it if we're not too chicken to try and we don't need to mimic the left's incrementalism, either, IMHO...

Guess I've been away from California long enough to not know who Sundheim is.

Guess I've been away from California long enough to not know who Sundheim is.

George "Duf" Sundheim. He was chairman of the California Republican Party, 2003-07. He has led the charge to Schwarzneggerize the CRP, including moves like super-early endorsements that pretty much eliminated the possibility of any real gubernatorial primary in 2006. When the Governor makes liberal moves, Sundheim is the first to be at his side defending the action, including his selection of Susan Kennedy (former Democratic Party operative and Gray Davis official) as his chief of staff.

I'm sure others can offer more.
