91-Year-Old's Beating

Army Veteran's Beating Caught On Tape

POSTED: 8:12 am PDT May 24, 2007

DETROIT -- A 22-year-old man was ordered Wednesday to stand trial on charges that he beat and carjacked a 91-year-old Army veteran.

Deonte E. Bradley was arrested May 10, six days after the attack on Leonard Sims. A convenience store surveillance videotape showing Sims being punched in the head was broadcast on news programs and Web sites. He was struck 21 times.

Bradley appeared in court Wednesday for his preliminary examination. Bradley's attorney asked the judge to provide protection for Bradley, who said he fears for his safety inside the Wayne County Jail. Eric Goze wants his client isolated because he has allegedly been threatened while in custody.

Sims described the attack frame by frame in a Wayne County courtroom.

"He asked for a light for a cigarette, pushed me in the face, then punched so fast, so close, he hit me about 20 times," Sims said. He testified that the punches damaged his hearing.

Police said Bradley confessed to the assault and carjacking.

In court, police Officer Kevin White read Bradley's confession: "I hit him a few times, got the keys and drove off in the car. It wasn't intentionally. It was stupid."

Sims' wife was asked about Bradley's request for protection.

"No, no, no. Let the prisoners have him. Let him see what it's like to be hit 21 times, and his friends stood by and watched and did nothing," Nora Sims said.

District Judge Mark A. Randon ruled there was sufficient evidence to bind Bradley over for trial. Randon raised Bradley's bond from $75,000 to $1 million, meaning he would have to pay 10 percent of that amount to be released.

To hit an innocent frail man is in itself such an iniquity, this person must be locked up for life, IMHO, if not death.

“I hit him a few times... It was stupid.”

That sort of thinking brings out the obvious perversity of his character, and will be sure trouble to many others, if left alone. It may not look too serious, but at an age like 91, even minor blows can cause organ failure, or oedema.

I append my earlier stance. Make that rigorous imprisonment, promptly followed by execution. These are maniacs demanding themselves to be made examples of.

said Bradley: "It wasn't intentionally."

And when Leroy stomps you in D-Block, that won't be "intentional" either.

Once the liberal judges are done with the case the old man is going to have to apologize for getting his face in the way of the mugger's fists.

Must be some way to smuggle that video in. Many of Bradley’s new “room-mates” were raised by elderly grandparents.

The judge imposed $1 million bail. Bradley won’t be getting out before sentencing. And this won’t go to appeal either. Bradley is 22 and almost certainly has priors in the past few years. He won’t be getting any “apologies” or breaks.

One thing most prisoners have is mothers, grandmothers, and daughters. Pedophiles get what they deserve and I am sure cowards that beat up Grandma’s do as well. Good luck in Jail Deonta E Bradley you are going to need it.(God I really love those made up africanized names)

I really hope you are correct. I’m so tired of seeing the guilty get off on technicalities and errors.

“91-year-old Army veteran.”

91y.o! He’s tough, and certainly running around with some major brass clackers on him. Three cheers for one tough old guy.

"It wasn't intentionally."

And after Leroy stomps you, maybe he'll advise you on proper use of adverbs.

Lot tougher than most 90 year olds.... and I've been around some.
I would want to kill the man who did that to my kin
He does in fact need the death penalty. We have too many savages running amok

It wasn't intentional? You accidentally hit him a few times? You accidentally got the keys? You accidentally drove off in his car? My, how accident-prone you are!

Leonard Sims Invited to Washington, D.C.

Scott Ryan, Karen Dinkins Reporting

Detroit — The 91-year old man who was beaten mercilessly during a carjacking earlier this month is being honored by former Secretary of State, (Ret.) Gen. Colin Powell.

Leonard Sims, himself a World War II veteran, has been invited by Powell to Memorial Day services in Washington, D.C.

Sims’ wife, Nora, told WWJ’s Karen Dinkins that she’s proud to get the invitation. “He’ll be one of the three soldiers from World War II that will be laying a wreath at the War Memorial for the veterans. Also, they will be laying a wreath at the Unknown Soldiers (now known as the Tomb of the Unknowns).”

22-year old Deonte Bradley faces carjacking and felony assault charges, accused of punching Sims and taking his car keys and knocking him down at the Stop and Go Liquor Store at 3206 W. McNichols in Detroit May 4. Bradley is charged with carjacking and assault with intent to do great bodily harm, both felonies.

The beating was captured on a store surveillance camera, and has generated national attention. Nora feels that justice will ultimately prevail.
