THE history of the Soviet Union had fewer black pages in its history than certain other countries, not least the United States, President Vladimir Putin has said in a speech.

"Regarding the problematic pages in our history, yes, we do have them, as does any state," Putin said at a social sciences conference, citing Stalin's purges during the 1930s.

I’m sure the tens of millions systematically starved to death by Stalin would disagree.

Or the several hundred million imprisoned behind the Iron Curtain for nearly five decades.

Old Vladimir seems to forget the 8 Million plus people that were murdured during stalins purges. He was as much a mass murderer as Hitler ever was.

Vlad apparently has a talent for dry humor and I never really realized it until now. Fascinating.

I guess it's OK to mention the purges because many of the victims were "Old Bolsheviks" (dedicated Communists). What about the millions of Ukrainians killed in the manmade famine, or the millions of other victims of the Gulag?

Putin doesn't have to worry too much that any Westerners who hear his remarks will know much about the other Soviet atrocities.

Fitzroy Maclean was stationed in Moscow in the British diplomatic service during the purges and has some interesting descriptions of the trials in his book Eastern Approaches.

Actually, the estimates of Stalin’s purges and the starvation that he created was probably more in the 30 to 50 million range.

Stalin’s early alliance with Hitler probably resulted in several million unnecessary deaths which are not included and certainly prolonged WWII.

I know Putin is a former KGB agent and is spouting the old party line. Still, it’s astounding that since he and the world know that since the Soviet archives have been opened it’s been documented that some 20 million perished under Stalin’s regime alone!
That’s some page! If he’s been quoted in context, he’s in a very serious and dangerous state of denial. The whole world knows why the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. This historical revisionism is Orwellian!

Stalin totally ignored reports from his own spies that the Germans were about to launch Operation Barbarossa. He was too busy trying to eradicate all the Poles he possibly could.

The Soviet Union Murdered 61 Million of it's own (not due to war) in DEMOCIDE.
Sorry Mr. Putin, you may control the history in Russia but the free world knows better.

I realize that Stalins toll was much higher than I mentioned but thats why I wrote the statement the way I did.

I knew he murdered well over 8 million people but I have’nt been keeping up on the numbers lately.

yep.

robert conquest is the authority on soviet killings.

my book is packed away.

if memory serves, 100,000,000 were killed by totalitarianism in the 20th c ,

of which, 60,000,000 were soviet deaths.
