The Italian foreign minister has warned the West against isolating Hamas, saying there is a risk of pushing the Islamic resistance movement into the arms of al-Qaeda. Massimo D'Alema described Hamas, which has been shunned by the West, as "a real power that represents a large part of the Palestinian people," according to Corriere della Sera and other Italian reports on Tuesday.
"Hamas has committed terrorist acts but it is also a movement of the people. For the West not to recognize a government that was democratically elected ... it is not a very good lesson in democracy," he said. "It is in the interest of the international community to avoid pushing such movements in the arms of al-Qaida," said D'Alema.

Well Italy has a leftist government and it shows. Maybe some one tell this guy that Hamas, since it's elected democraticly, should also behave like it's elected that way and not shoot people in hospitals or throw people off large buildings. Also, can some one tell me the difference between al-Qaeda and Hamas? They are both killing off just about everyone they can and both are bent on implementing sharia law.
Maybe this idtio should look at the Hamas show for little kids and maybe then he would see what Hamas is really all about.

".For the West not to recognize a government that was democratically elected..." History is replete with evil regimes that have been democratically elected. ....regimes "of the people." But leftists somehow think elections should be the sole criteria for recognizing any nation/people.

So true. Hitler was democratically elected (initially).
Sad to say Italy is scared of the Islamo-fascists that infiltrate their underbelly, as with the rest of old man europe.

D”Almea is too stupid for words to describe. Europe as we know it will be over in about twenty years. Long live Eurabia.

The Italian FM who said this, needs his residence and family relocated to Gaza, and he can reveal his impressions from there.

When what amounts essentially to gangs of criminals being legitimized, it is any wonder that we find terrorism everywhere in the world today. The failure of the Western nations to universally and roundly condemn Arab nations for its fedayeen activity in the 1940s through the early 1960s and then to allow those same nations to harbor the PLO was to silently condone terrorism. Arafat orders a kidnapped American diplomat to be executed and a few years later he is shaking hands with the President in the Rose Garden. (The slimey little putz should have been wacked).
Unfortunately, it is not just a leftist Italian government playing footsie with terrorism. Both Republican and Democrat administrations have fallen over themselves promote a thoroughly phoney "peace process." No wonder terrorist groups like Al Qaeda sprout up like weeds in the Middle East. The nations of the world, including this one, have provided them plenty of "fertilizer." The AQ terrormeisters know that eventually their representatives, burnoosed and wearing fashionable silken suits, will be sitting down with their Western counterparts at an oversized oaken table in some marbled Geneva hall. "Can't happen?" you say. It already has.
