News Ratings: NBC Nightly News Wins Close November Sweeps

NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams won the 2007 November sweep period in total viewers and viewers in the key 25-54 demo, barely beating out ABC World News with Charles Gibson.

NBC Nightly News held a 100,000-viewer lead over ABC World News in total viewers and a 20,000-viewer lead in the key demo. The numbers for total viewers and demo viewers were the closest they have been in a sweeps period since 2001 and 1996, respectively.

The sweeps win by NBC continues a seesaw ratings race that has been going on since early this year, when ABC World News overtook longtime evening news leader NBC Nightly News in both demo and total viewers.

The sweeps ratings are below:

• NBC Nightly News: 9.21 million total viewers, 2.3 rating/9 share, 2.79 million viewers in the key demo.

• ABC World News: 9.11 million total viewers, 2.2 rating/9 share, 2.77 million viewers in the key demo.

• CBS Evening News with Katie Couric: 6.74 million total viewers, 1.7 rating/6 share, 2.08 million viewers in the key demo.

Let’s see...9.2 + 9.1 + 6.7. That’s about 25 million idiots, or less than 10% of the American populace. I guess the rest of the idiots are watching Olberman, The Daily Show, killing an unborn baby, protesting a war, complaining about rich people, writing curriculum, filing fraudulent unemployment claims, cleaning their parent’s basement, lying about adultery, bribing Chinese officials, running illegal ponzi schemes on behalf of Hillary!, blaming President Bush for everything, making love not war, and writing their next manifesto to tune in.

They will Dump her Perky

If the MSM cared about ratings/circulation, they'd print the truth. Since the goal is to distribute propaganda, they need loyal foot soldiers.

They kept Rather on for many, many years and I think he may have been in last place for many of them.

They’ll keep her on until other forces make them otherwise...

But...but...but...I thought she was supposed to represent the Phoenix of CBS News. She was supposed to let CBS News rise out of the ashes. Tis a very tragic for this Couric fan...,. NOT REALLY, actually one time I flipped onto the Evening News and a gentleman by the name of Harry Smith was subbing, doing an excellent job in my opinion. It was the first time I watched an alphabet network newscast in ages.

Who’s perkier, Katie Couric or Rachel Ray? They’re both watchable for only 10 minutes at a time.

I get most of my news from cable or the 'net (a lot of it from FR). I occasionally catch a big 3 newscast, but not often. But I'm not surprised that Harry Smith did a good job -- just like Bob Schieffer, the interim anchor between Rather and Couric, did at CBS. He also happened to get better ratings than either.

There's no school like the old school.

One occasional exception to my generally network-news-free diet is CBS' Sunday Morning. Their quiet, low-key approach to news is perfect for before that first cup of coffee, as is Charles Osgood, another member of the old school. Osgood follows in the footsteps of the late Charles Kuralt.

Gad, with numbers like that there's no wonder the network news divisions are working for another 9/11.

Nobody is watching. Except my mother-in-law...

Obviously, for CBS anchor Katie Couric to recover the glory and grandeur that
was once the Tiffany network's mark, she needs to raise her fluff-to-news ratio.
In other words, she needs to do much more of the same. Good grief and good luck.

Oh yes, Charles Osgood is a great fit for the unique program—I know my father enjoys him as much as he did Kuralt.
