Review of "Grace is Gone" (John Cusack movie dealing with Iraq War)
Ted Baehr's Movieguide ^

Posted on 12/06/2007 8:27:06 PM PST by World_Events

In Brief: GRACE IS GONE stars John Cusack as Stanley Phillips, a former soldier whose wife Grace still serves in Iraq. Stanley is left taking care of their two daughters, Heidi, age 12, and Dawn, age 8. One day, two soldiers visit Stanley. They tell him that Grace has been killed. When Heidi and Dawn return from school, he decides not to tell them about their mother but take them out instead. Longing to give his children their last moments of innocence, he decides to drive them to Florida to visit Dawn’s favorite amusement park, Enchanted Gardens. As Stanley bonds more closely with his daughters, he delays the inevitable task of changing their lives forever. GRACE IS GONE is a quietly powerful, emotional, pro-family movie about handling an ultimate loss. The acting is compelling and believable. It will touch many viewers deeply. In one scene, Stanley has an argument about the Iraq War with his brother, John. John takes the anti-war side, but Stanley supports his wife’s decision to defend liberty and her country. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children because of some brief strong foul language and the subject matter.

I love Ted's movie reviews as it is one way I can screen out the dreck coming out of tinseltown these days, so I was quite surprised to see him give this one a good review. I would never have guessed Cusack would make a movie like this; I would have thought it would be one bush bash/anti iraq war fest after another. Surprising.

Cusaks a fine actor. I don’t know about his politics.

I would have thought it would be one bush bash/anti iraq war fest after another.

That's because it is an anti-American film.

I enjoy Ted's movie reviews as well, especially in that they make sure I can avoid film where there is upper frontal male nudity, smoking, or disrespect towards authority.

Kidding aside, he does do a decent job. And this doesn't necessasarily have to be a pro- or anti- war story, just a realistic one.

I've always liked him and most of his roles even if I suspect he's probably a lib.

Amazing. These Hollywood Whores will give up their beliefs as soon as some filmmaker ponies up the cash. If its a Bush bashing pack of lies with inflated numbers of Iraqi civilian casualities they want to take the starring role. But they will sell out even if its pro troops which they are not.

He is a FLAMING liberal. I mean, he makes Danny Glover and Sean Penn look conservative.

Yikes.

I may have to reconsider seeing his flicks.

Heck Mike Douglas is a lib too, yet he usually picks good roles and plays them well; American President not withstanding.

“Since May 2005, he has been an occasional contributing blogger at The Huffington Post, most recently interviewing Naomi Klein. He has written extensively on his opposition to the war in Iraq and his disdain for the Bush administration, calling their worldview “depressing, corrupt, unlawful, and tragically absurd”.[8]”

Based on the review, the film sounds worthwhile.

Of course we all know reviews can be misleading.

Uh ... that's their job, they ACT according to whatever the filmmaker (who, amazingly enough, pony up the cash just so actors will act in his film) ask them to ACT ...

I guess we still have Robert Duvall, but he is getting a bit old.

Indeed -- and thankfully, Ted Baehr doesn't tend to be misleading.
