Charlie Wilson singlehandedly "won" the Afghani mujahideen resistance war against Soviets, Reagan and Bush didn't follow up his victory by failing to provide the money and secure Afghanistan ("nation building") - the lesson of the movie - for those who don't remember or know history, this will now be history according to Aaron Sorkin of "West Wing" fame (just like "JFK" and "Nixon" is now history according to Oliver Stone).

Expect "director's cut" with the scenes cut from the theatrical release - due to pressure by Joanne Herring and Texas legal eagles - showing on cable next summer, during election season when most people will likely see it for the first time - that's how "history" is made.

I KNEW there was something fishy about all these libs claiming this was somehow a "pro-war" movie over at AICN, and saying it showed how the US defeated the Soviets.

With Hanks and Roberts, what else could one have expected?

With the retreat of the Red Army from Afghanistan followed by the fall of the Soviet Union, Jimmy Carter’s national security adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, in the last few years has been claiming the U.S. provoked the Afghan War. He said this was done with some grand strategy in mind to bring on the collapse of the Soviets. In other words, it was he and Carter who made the wall come down, not Reagan.

Julia Roberts reprises her role as the beautiful yet clueless pol girl in Petty Vermin. Tom Hanks shines yet again as the affectating retard.

Drug charges against Sorkin upgraded to felonies

...a felony count for possession of "illicit mushrooms," a felony count for possession of cocaine base and a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana.

My New Year wish is for a film about the Clinton Balkin War, instigated on lies and for political distraction. A war where with our NATO/EU allies we managed to bomb Christian Serbia, our allies in WW 1&2 in order to promote a Terror state on the doorstep to Europe as well as destroy our relationship with Russia.
That would be a good movie!

The movie is bombing at the box office so that’s good news.

I have no doubt the movie will get more attention on TNT or some other Turner cable network channel and get more exposure to the uneducated who will buy this drivel as the truth.

hollyweird’s money pot to make these anti-American POS movies is drying up. A few more multi-hundred million dollar boondoggles and blunders and the banks in hollyweird will be broke... but hell will be full to overflowing when the money-men start jumping from buildings.

I’m pleased for this review although I had no intention of seeing the movie in the first place. Watching anything that has Julia Roberts as part of the cast is cruel and unusual punishment. I think there is a provision against that in the Bill of Rights or somewhere.

(REPOST)

I too, watched the History Channel’s slant on Charlie Wilson and was glad that I did. It saved me from even entertaining the thought of going to see it in the theaters or buying it when it comes out on DVD.

In my opinion, it should have titled “Joanne Herring’s War”. She played Charlie Wilson weaknesses like a fiddle which led Wilson to play ANOTHER liberal (Doc Long) who held the purse strings to the needed funding.

While Wilson was driving around in a drunken stupor and ending up in a hit and run, she was in Paris setting up things up to bait Doc Long with all the things it takes to entice any corrupt politician, wine, women and excess.

In the end, who really defeated the soviets in Afghanistan? It was same man who broke the back of the Soviet Union and communism...Ronald Reagan.

The acting might be good in this ludicrous depiction of Hollywood’s version of history but it should be labeled “For Entertainment Purposes Only”.

"In his book, "Ronald Reagan: The Role of a Lifetime," Lou Cannon"

Better to quote Kengor than Cannon, from The Crusader, p. 231: "Once president, his administration worked hard to get weapons to the rebels, which included shipments not just from Washington but from sympathetic nations like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, China and Pakistan. CIA director Bill Casey jetted around the world prodding nations for aid and arms; he reprimanded foreign leaders when the weapons were not up to par, once in April 1981 telling a stunned Anwar Sadat that the material being supplied by the Egyptians was "garbage."....

...Making his point in a heated reprimand of Gorbachev, Reagan then asked the general secretary angrily and pointedly:"Are you still trying to take over the world?!" Gorbachev was visibly shaken, staring at Reagan in silence, mouth agape, with a stunned expression.

Reagan arms control director Ken Adelman, a witness, called Reagan's words in that exchange the most "harsh indictment of Soviet behavior ever delivered to the top Soviet man."

In the movie version that I saw...James Bond took care of it while romancing a blond and crashing a C-130!

On the flip, Sorkin ironically makes a strong case for Nation-Building in Iraq.

I would love if Tom Clancy wrote a screenplay for a movie based on William Casey. What a great man. This would be a movie about the CIA and the Reagan years worth seeing.
