Today, Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour announced the appointment of Representative Roger Wicker to serve as United State Senator for the State of Mississippi, succeeding Senator Trent Lott. Click here for the President's comments

The President also issued his New Year message see Quote of the Day for the contents.

At the end of the year it is often a time reflect on the previous year or maybe to look forward to something special or life changing that you know is to happen in the New Year. This year on the dose we embark on the last full year of the George W Bush Presidency. As an English girl (woman) initially this concept was very foreign to me but having got more involved in your politics and developed a deeper understanding of how they work it does not phase me like it used to.

In Britain we do not know the exact date and departure of our government but on the other hand it can be much swifter shorter and more traumatic than your system. We have an election one day and a new Prime Minister the next along with a new cabinet.

Now back to the subject in hand, lets make this coming year one in which we can rejoice in the George W Bush Presidency and also maybe reflect and even weep at the results of some of the actions he had to take after September 11th 2001. Many have died, American, Afghans, Iraqi's etc. friend and foe alike. Much as we may support his actions we also have great feeling and compassion for those and the families that have suffered as a result.

God Bless your President and of course his Vice President who has backed him all the way and I am sure without his support some of the decisions the President has taken may well not have been executed in the same fashion without knowing he had the counsel of someone else who although does not share the same responsibilities as the President understands and appreciates that responsibility. This team is a unique team in the realms of USA politics this Vice President has no further office ambitions and is free therefore to support, advise and carry out the wishes of the President, we may well find that future Presidents consider this when appointing their running mate. It has indeed lifted the profile of the Vice President and made it a useful not just a constitutional role.

As a consequence of this Presidency this daily thread has given us an unique look into the lives of both the President and Vice President I will not dwell on this now as I am sure this and much of what I have touched on above will no doubt be the subject of the end of year and the end of this era Dose threads in the months to come.

Today as well as touching on the above I also want to thank all the dose hosts over the years some of which I know well others not as well. Some I know just as hosts others I consider friends and now colleagues and part of a team that I am proud to be in fact now the longest serving current member of the team.

During this thread I will thank some individuals personally others as a group and also post some photos which immediately make me think of these hosts. I apologise in advance if I miss anyone and please take the thread as a thank you to all equally as you all give part of your own personality and qualities in how you present your thread and what is important to you and yours. God bless and keep you all.

Probably the host I was closest to was my dear friend sadly departed Gretchen and I would like to dedicate this tribute to her and her son Mark and dear friend Michael.

As well as hosts many others who we collectively refer to as dosers have become friends, shared joys and sorrows this thread has done so much in not just lifting the profile of the President but bringing people together from various parts of the country and even the world.

Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island

QUOTE OF THE DAY

For Immediate Release Office of the Press Secretary December 31, 2007

Presidential Message for New Year's Day, 2008

As we enter this New Year, we reflect on the past and look forward to a promising year ahead.

A future of hope and opportunity begins with a robust economy. Thanks to America's workers and entrepreneurs, our economy grew at a vigorous rate last year. Keeping taxes low and exercising fiscal restraint helped ensure that the number of jobs increased and the deficit once again fell ahead of schedule. The underpinnings of our economy have proven strong, competitive, and resilient enough to overcome the challenges we face. In the coming year, we will continue to encourage growth in the economy so Americans have more money to invest in their businesses, spend on their families, and put aside for the future.

In addition to our efforts here at home, the United States continued its work to spread freedom and peace around the world. America is determined to defeat terrorists and extremists, and we will remain on the offensive against the enemies of freedom. In 2008, we will continue to stand beside our partners in the international community to lay a foundation of peace for our children and grandchildren.

America is grateful for the service and sacrifice of our Nation's troops and their families. During this hopeful time of year, we remain mindful of the courage and resolve of the fine men and women who protect our country and defend freedom's cause.

As we welcome this New Year, we move forward with trust in the power of the American spirit, confidence in our purpose, and faith in a loving God who created us to be free.

Laura and I send our best wishes for a happy New Year. May God bless you, may God bless our troops and their families, and may God bless America.

GEORGE W. BUSH

First of all I wish to thank all of the current team, daisyscarlett, kaslin, starwise and silent_jonny. Thank you all for your support and co-operation and often dropping everything and putting up a thread at little or no notice. I thank you and I know all dosers do.

We give our time and often a great deal of time for something we love and believe in but know that that this is not taken for granted and each appreciate the time taken to prepare and post these threads.

Now to previous hosts I thank of course the creator of this thread without who we would not have this wonderful place to enjoy Rintense.

I also wish to thank OhioWfan who through her anniversary threads was how by searching on google or Yahoo I found Free Republic in the first place and eventually the dose.

I wish also to thank truthNtegrity who help and guidance in showing me the spirit of this thread I will always appreciate.

I also wish to mention Pippin (my dearest little hobbit) who due to circumstances mainly computer problems gave up her Monday slot and therefore I was asked to be a dose host.

MJY1288 - Mike I thank you also for being the first host to approach me several weeks prior to me being asked to host the dose to see if I would be interested. Mike we miss you and hope that you are better health than when we heard from you last.

I also thank Onyx for her joy in how she embraced being a host in particular I remember her acceptance freepmail in which she expressed her honour in being asked, I counter that with saying it was an honour for our team she accepted this, I know you have other priorities nowadays Onyx but when you can please pop in a say hello you never know you might win another toaster.

Justanobody I thank you for your turn of duty and I also thank you for your wonderful support of the troops and congratulation on being a grandmother - enjoy.

Gretchen was the host that approached me finally to join the team and helped me no end in learning how to post the thread etc. How I miss you my friend Christmas seemed strange without hearing from you I will always remember and treasure our special bond and friendship.

I thank our 2 newest members of the team but great old time freepers Daisyscarlett and Starwise, thank you for joining us and thank you for your contributions we enjoy and appreciate your further adding variety and richness to the thread.

Kaslin, thank you for joining us and in particular how you have recently dropped everything and put a thread up quickly when for whatever reason the rest of us could not. Thank you for all your help.

Last but not least of our current hosts Silent_jonny it is great to have a male in the team to give balance and support and of course contribute their own special talents and in Jonny's case his wonderful artistic talent. The photo of the day I have used today is one of Jonny's drawings, the one he sent me as a Christmas present - God Bless and keep you Jonny.

Lastly another freeper who I miss and count as a friend is Wolfstar, if you read this please drop me a line I miss you my friend. I hope you and your animals are well and have had a peaceful Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. It is Wolfstar who has helped me to understand and appreciate how your political system works and I thank her for this and of course her support and friendship.

I am sorry if I have missed any previous hosts out but this is intentional but purely either my bad memory or you were before my time but whoever you are God Bless you and I know that others remember and appreciate you.

I will now post a few photos that remind of hosts past and present.
