Keep emotions out of lion management
Rapid City Journal ^ | 12 mar 08

Mountain lion management is a balancing act between the preservation of wildlife and the protection of humans who live, work and play in cougar country.

Striking that fine balance between animal and human needs was further complicated last week by the first reported wild mountain lion attack on a person in the Black Hills.

Ryan Hughes, 33, of Rapid City was treated at Rapid City Regional Hospital for scratches and puncture wounds to his face and arm after a self-reported attack by a mountain lion at Sheridan Lake on March 1.

State Game, Fish & Parks officials call Hughes’ report credible but still have not confirmed the attack.

If and when they do, it will be a historic turning point in the mountain lion issue. From that point on, public policy toward mountain lions will always be viewed through a different lens.

A mountain lion attacked a dog here in one of the suburbs of Dallas a couple of weeks ago. Luckily the owner woke up in the middle of the night from the racket and turned on the backyard light and scared the cat off. They have been spotted in several of the suburbs around here. So far no one has been hurt.

... anti-hunting advocates will argue that the establishment of a lion-hunting season has made humans less safe by increasing the number of problem-causing juvenile lions in the popuation.

Gee. Just send them to Family Court and put them in State run Foster Homes - problem solved.

Mountain lions should be introduced into liberal cities and backyards of stupid soccer moms who send $25 each month to the fascist Sierra Club.

You know, it’s like the yuppies who move downwind from a rendering plant then sue to close the plant because of the quality of life. The plant was there first.

They act as if mountain lion attacks are new, maybe they are in the Black Hills but here in CA they are common as fleas. We get them all the time. Stop the hunting of lions and you incease the attacks as the population of lions increases and the territory that is available to them stays static or decreases.

A few years ago an initiative that would have opened hunting on lions in CA was placed on the ballot because of all the attacks by lions in this state. A massive propaganda campaign by the antis in the south led to its defeat. Since that time the press has made sure the only attacks reported are those that actually cause deaths of humans, mainly because it would be hard to not report those. The idea of course is to use the old liberal tactic of pretending the problem doesn't exist in order to make sure the hunting ban stays in force, who cares about the human costs? Not liberals.

Some of the zoos may consider putting a mule in charge of the cat exibits.

Although it's wide open, I think I'll stop there. :)

The attack on this couple was well reported because it titillated the press for some reason, it even made it to the ANIMAL PLANET Last week...

I live 5 miles from downtown New Haven Ct. A Friend was sitting in her Kitchen with her little girl coloring when she glanced up and there was a mountain lion looking in the window.

Last summer the police knocked on our door and told us to be careful as there was a bear wandering around the neighborhood.

We have some coyote’s running around at night. I see them pretty regularly and keep a close eye on pets.

we have deer in our yard daily.

It’s like living in an animal park, houses are 1/2 to 1 per acre, reasonably dense population. If it was not for that I would start my own wildlife management program.

I am really surprised. The deer I would love to see in my yard except they would eat my flowers. The coyotes would eat my cats, but I don't have cats anymore. The lions and bears would be absolutely unacceptable.

We have all the small animals in our yard daily, rabbits, raccoons, possums, squirrels, skunks and more birds that I can count. I love all that but no bears and lions, thank you!

Deer are not all that cute. One of them tried to stomp my Jack Russel terrier to death if he was not as fast as he is it would have been curtains for him.

skunks, raccoons, rabbits all have their problems. We had a family locally, dog got sprayed by a skunk - family came in contact with the dog skunk turned out to have rabies. the whole family had to get rabies shots.

We probably know personally and incidentally 15 people with lyme’s disease. my brother in law will not go out in public due to the paralysis in his face from lyme’s. Another acquaintance was an accountant who now has a problem adding single digit numbers. Others we know have relatively mild effects, all the same I worry about my family’s health.

I would prefer to push nature back to the hills and not have it in my backyard. When I want to commune with nature I’ll watch Animal Planet

With that much room - this might be your best solution to having unwanted critters in your yard. http://www.akc.org/breeds/tibetan_mastiff/index.cfm
