Wife of ex-gov (McGreevey): I paid for cronies to come to wedding

ELIZABETH, New Jersey (AP) -- The estranged wife of New Jersey's gay former governor portrayed herself as a dutiful spouse and dedicated political ally who went so far as to pay for their $30,000 wedding and to add his political cronies to the guest list.

Taking the stand Wednesday in their bitter divorce trial, Dina Matos McGreevey claimed she devoted herself to James McGreevey's goal of being elected governor.

"Once we became engaged, I was a full partner," said Matos McGreevey, who was to return to the witness stand Thursday.

The McGreeveys wed in 2000, but their marriage unraveled after he proclaimed himself "a gay American" in 2004, announced he had had an affair with a male staffer and resigned as governor. The staffer denies the affair and says he was sexually harassed by McGreevey.

Matos McGreevey, 41, wants compensation for losing out on the perks of his job -- state police transportation and a 24/7 security detail, a household staff and use of two beach houses -- because he resigned 13 months shy of completing his first term.

“Once we became engaged, I was a full partner,”

Are we supposed to feel sorry for her? She wanted the power as much as him. And then to stand up there with him while he came clean, just to make him look good. I have no sympathy for that type of woman.

Marrying for political advantage can only take you so far, Dina...just ask Hillary Clinton.

She paid “Cronies” — strangers and little boys McGreevy picked up in filthy public restrooms after their fecal fest. She is disgusting and stupid at best.

McGreevy should pay up like every other man who gets dragged into Divorce Court in New Jersey. When Joe Six Pack gets told to pay up in NJ and he tells the Judge he can't afford it, He's told “That's YOUR Problem” Well Jimbo PAYUP!

But he's just a penniless seminary student!

Gay, straight, whatever. These two were made for each other.

Taking the stand Wednesday in their bitter divorce trial.

Power is fleeting, anyone with it, knows this. We all want power as some point, every one of us. Some get so engulfed or have it as part of their lives it’s hard to understand.

Do I feel sorry for her, yes. Do I feel sorry for her children, yes. We have no idea if she knew he was gay or not and no one knew, it would ever become public.

He is at fault and the only person I have no sympathy is McGreevey himself because only he knew how evil he could be.

Is it possible for both of these creeps to lose this lawsuit?

Sometimes the most just thing would be to award both parents’ assets entirely to the kids.

My husband was active in Jersey politics for many years and knew McGreevey professionally for a long time.

Husband said everybody had wondered about McGreevey for years because no one ever saw him with a woman that wasn't a platonic friend. Then one day McGreevey goes to Ireland and comes back with "a fiancee" and "a kid on the way", and they all looked at each other thinking, "What the hell?" It was supposed then that he found a "knocked up" (not by him) Dina and made a deal with her.

Whether or not that assumption proved true, is a question mark.

I know someone who worked with Dina Matos at the hospital where she was PR director (I think that’s what it was). Apparently it was common knowledge around the hospital that she hooked up with McGayness for the perks.

I’ll take her side over his for most things any day, but in the avarice department they’re evenly matched.

That was a whoops-- the description was accurate, except that it described how McGreevey & his first wife, Kari Schutz, hooked up, not the current one he is divorcing.

She had my sympathy, right up till then.
