HONG KONG (AFP) - US swim legend Mark Spitz won't be on hand in Beijing if Michael Phelps breaks his record of seven gold medals at a single Olympics—because, he says, no one bothered to invite him.

Spitz said the International Olympic Committee, a US television network or FINA—the international body that governs world swimming—should have brought him to the Games this year, with Phelps making a go at his record.

This is not a very flattering portrait of the great swimmer. Mark, a little humility goes a long way.

The Olympics are filled with a bunch of spoiled egotistical brats.

They spend all their time training for something useless; mooch off their families -— for some personal glory, at best.

And I say that as a sometimes serious athelete.

should have brought him to the Games this year, with Phelps making a go at his record.

Well, to his point, MLB did drag Hank Aaron to every game when Barry Bonds was getting ready to break his record. Not agrreing with him, I just understand where he's coming from.

“This is not a very flattering portrait of the great swimmer. Mark, a little humility goes a long way. “

Where does this has been get off?

People don’t owe him a “free ride” or a special invite.

I’d bet even Bush paid his own way for himself and the family.

No need top be humble. Mark Spitz achieved what no one, before or since, has been able to eclipse. I think it shows great attitude and character that he would want to be present as someone breaks his record.

BTW: The U.S. Olympic Committee failed to invite Marty Glickman to the 1996 games in Atlanta—the 50th anniversary of Avery Brundage’s historic capitulation to Adolph Hitler.

I just understand where he's coming from.

Me, too. Actually, I think he's absolutely right -- NBC should have invited him.

Sheesh. All he had hoped for was an invite, not an all expense paid trip.

He wanted to present the medals to Phelps.

I think the limelight should be totally and only on Phelps.
