Barack Obama continued his campaign tour of battleground Ohio with a stop at a Lima church, where he quietly attended services at a Lutheran church.
Obama's presence wasn't acknowledged at the 10 a.m. service on Sunday until the church's pastor, Lars Olson, referred to him as a special guest.
Obama is the first Democratic presidential candidate to visit Allen County, a longtime Republican stronghold, in decades.
Olson said he was first told of the visit at about 8:30 a.m. Lima police officers received a call at about the same time. After the service, Obama chatted outside with supporters for about 25 minutes.
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., center, talks with Pastor Lars Olson left, and his wife Pastor Katherine Olson and son Carl Olson, 11 months, after going to church at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Lima, Ohio, Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008.
Another news story says that Obama--who, to my knowledge, has not been catechized and confirmed in the Lutheran church--took communion.
I wonder if Barry went to the traditional, blended, contemporary, or God D*MN AmeriKKKa service.
LOL!
Maybe he was exposed to some real Christian preaching instead of “hate Whitey” nonsense and “G-d D-— America”!
It may have put him into schock. After all his childhood preaching was “hate those Jews and Christian infidels” sort of blather. Oh, we’re supposed to forget all that.
ELDNCA.
It’s an ELCA congregation. Whod’a thunk it? The message was probably right up his alley. Wonder if he partook of Communion?
Obama is searching for something - he just can’t decide who is, what career he wants, what his political center is, or what church he should attend. Sad really.
Does the ELCA practice close communion? As an Elder for a LCMS Church, we protect the sanctity of the Lords Supper by disuading those who dont agree with Lutheran communion from participating.
Obama took communion and shook hands with other worshippers during the 10 a.m. service.
I thought it would be ECLA. I don’t think he would attend an LCMS service. Not enough God **** America sermons.
No, as Pastor Olson allowing Obama to commune indicates.
BTW, the more correct term, historically, is "closed" Communion, not "close."
Did he carry his prayer rug with him?
You’re the Pastor. ;) Ours uses both terms.
Our WELS congregation uses the term membership Communion. Not sure that I’ve heard of it put that way in any other WELS church, though. As we are what I like to call a missionary outpost congregation, it is a more inviting way of putting it, IMHO.
I like to think that all Christians are working for the same boss, but this story tends to make one wonder...
In our ELCA congregation the pastor announces that all who believe that Jesus is truly present in the Lord’s Supper are welcome”.
Yes, but, with a name like Henrickson, I did not start out in the heavily German Missouri Synod but in the old lutfisk-loving Swedish Augustana Synod (since absorbed into the ELCA).
I would respond that even Satan understands Jesus to be truly present in the Sacrament of the Altar.
He is probably pleased to be welcome at that particular table...
Aye, that's why Old Scratch works overtime trying to keep Christians from the holy table!
