I find it had to believe myself that the “Greatest Generation” spawned some of the biggest, whiniest, loser, cowards on the face of the earth. Was it the Beatles? Who know? They were even corrupted by Bob Dylan.
Any generation that would arrogate to itself the title Greatest Generation is dealing with some serious emotional issues. Brokaw was either pandering or simply wrong to name them that.
Every generation has its greatness. The “Greatest” gave us FDR, massive deficits, payroll taxes, loss of natural rights and an alphabet soup of government agencies we’ve never escaped. They also did many wonderful things. Greatness is not limited to a generation.
I teach youth ages 14-18 and there are many great among them. Clearly, the Founding Fathers were great as well.
The self-proclaimed “greatest generation” indeed created these hedonistic, atheistic brats from the ‘60s. It can be laid right at their doorstep.
They had some hardships as they grew up, and so then spoiled their kids. All kinds of reasons, but mostly not wanting their kids to live the hardship they did. What they mostly did wrong was to stand by idly, and sometimes even help, as the universities became radicalized. They stood by and assisted in the effort, to turn this country to socialism.
That “greatest generation” silliness is just that. The WWI generation,, the Generation that built the railroads and settled the west,, the generation that fought the civil war,,, the generation that fought the indian wars in the Jackson era, And the generation of our founders and the early years of the republic,,,
All can justifiably claim that title in complete honesty.
Many with a better claim.

One could say that the “Greatest Generation” turned out to be the “Greatest failure” in their kids...
The Greatest Generation brought us SSI, Medicare, Medicaid, War on Poverty, etc. Don’t let them off the hook, we only made their mess worse. The Greatest Generation built the nest and we are still trying to feather it.
