SAN FRANCISCO: Lack of cash is crunching Newsom campaign
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8/2/9 | Phillip Matier and Andrew Ross

The biggest challenge facing San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's run for governor is not who's running the campaign, but whether he has enough money to keep the campaign going.

Newsom, who has a full staff working the campaign, has raised $2.8 million with only about $1.1 million left in the bank.

Meanwhile, Newsom's presumed major rival in the upcoming Democratic primary - Attorney General Jerry Brown, whose only staff is wife Ann Gust - has raised about $8 million, with roughly $7 million in the bank. And that's before he's officially declared, giving him the ability to hit up many donors - and for even bigger contributions.

Granted, money doesn't always translate into winning, but it is pretty obvious that "we need to do better on the fundraising front," said Newsom campaign consultant Garry South.

It's a point South has been repeating to a reluctant Newsom for months.

And while the exit of campaign manager Eric Jaye may have been big news locally, statewide it was the exit of longtime Newsom fundraiser Paige Barry Arata that caught the eye of insiders who pony up the major money for such campaigns.

Team Newsom has now brought in former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee fundraiser Chris Corcoran to run the operation.

But the bottom line is that the only person who can raise the millions needed is Newsom himself. And that means working the phones and winking and nodding to special interests, something Newsom has been loath to do so far.

I live in San Jose (50 miles south of SF) and the problem with 2-some-Newsome is he thinks the rest of the state is in touch with the freaks that support him in SF.

The guy lives in a bubble.

Boy those Calif. Dems sure have a great choice,
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, or Attorney General Jerry Brown. You couldn’t find two bigger pieces of crap west of the Mississippi.
Mel Martinez and Chuckie Schumer are east of the river.

“You couldn’t find two bigger pieces of crap west of the Mississippi.”

Horserace nonsense from two idiot candidates. The press acts like they both possess the correct views.

The best thing about a clown like Newsom being elected governor is the fact that it would finally give the mortally wounded California the coup de grâce it so richly deserves.
As hideous as the state is now, electing this poseur as Governor would probably result in open rebellion and rioting about 6 months after he takes the oath of office.

From http://usliberals.about.com/b/2005/06/18/democratic-family-news-bachelor-jerry-brown-ties-the-knot.htm

“Lifelong bachelor, 67 year old Mayor Jerry Brown of Oakland, CA, was married Saturday to Ann Gust, former GAP executive, in the Oakland Rotunda building. Mayor Brown, of course, was twice elected governor of California and unsuccessfully ran three times for the Presidency.”

“Performing the ceremony was US Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) who intoned “How fortunate you are to have found each other.” In attendance were former Governor Gray Davis and former speaker of the state Assembly and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.”

Wow, inflation is really increasing the price of High Office in California.

Pretty bad when you can’t even buy an election...
