Storage tank from Deepwater Horizon washes ashore on PCB

PANAMA CITY BEACH — Bay County's first tangible landfall from the Deepwater Horizon crisis is not tar balls or oil plumes. Instead, it’s a storage tank officials think was onboard the Deepwater Horizon rig when it exploded and sank off the coast of Louisiana in April.

A tank weighing 5,000 pounds with a 550-gallon capacity washed ashore Saturday morning near 14th Street and Front Beach Road in Laguna Beach, U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Steve Caskey said.

A sticker bearing the BP name and the word “Horizon” led authorities to believe the tank was blown from the rig, Petty Officer Aaron Frost added. The tank also had a serial number on it, and Coast Guard officials have contacted BP, but have not yet received confirmation of the vessel’s origin.

Near neutral buoyancy, it would appear. It looks like it would have been easier to bump into it than to spot it.

Diesel fuel weight is about 8 pounds per gal. That tank in the picture is about a 800 gal tank are less and wt is probably about 2500 lbs full. Try lifting a 55 gal barrel filled with concrete.

The picture tells you why farmers fill their tractor tires with liquid and put wheel weights on their rear tires.

Oily substance they claim. There was a pic of it floating in the water just off the beach and it was just barely breaking the surface.

Doesn't matter where in the water it was.
How does a 2.5 ton object, in navigatable waters for 50+ days, not pop-up on someone's radar?
Ya' know, like what if this was a terrorist planting a small nuke.
