N.J. Gov. Christie plans takeover of Atlantic City casino district, sale of Meadowlands Racetrack

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie will announce plans for an unprecedented overhaul of New Jersey’s troubled gaming industry Wednesday — including a complete takeover of the Atlantic City casino and entertainment district, and the sell-off or shutdown of the struggling Meadowlands Racetrack.

The Atlantic City takeover removes virtually all local control from the gaming district, from police protection to garbage pickup. At the same time the state is finally throwing in the towel on state-backed harness racing, which lost nearly $10 million last year.

163 0 262 Share The plans — reviewed by The Star-Ledger — were outlined in a report by a special commission created by the governor in February and charged with the task of deciding how best to fix the state’s faltering casino and horse racing industries.

The governor’s office put an advisory this afternoon saying only that Christie will announce the findings of the commission Wednesday at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, and in Atlantic City, but provided no detail. A spokesman for the governor declined comment.

The recommendations, as outlined in the commission report, call for the most significant changes in New Jersey’s once lucrative entertainment, sports and gaming venues since casino gambling was approved and the opening of the Meadowlands in 1976

I would say this is the biggest “move” in Jersey...in the past three decades...IF it happens.

Atlantic City was always dumpy. I think for years they simply didn’t care because for serious gambling, they were literally the only game in the entire northeastern USA. I am guessing now that other places are offering slots and table games this has really taken away a lot of business.

Oh, it’s gonna happen. Press conference today at 2 pm. AC is falling apart. Crime out of control. Corrupt city government. Christie’s gonna have State Troopers taking care of the casino district and the boardwalk. I love it! I love this governor. Never afraid!

Atlantic City is a typical third-world set up. High-rollers along the strip, but walk a block inland and you’re deep in “Gimme your money” territory. Both the mugging kind and the free-government handouts kind.

That’s what I was thinking...between the unions and now the casinos, I hope Christie’s security is on par with the USSS.
