How Many Social Security Numbers Do You Have?
cnbc,com ^ | 8/12/10 | Christina Cheddar Berk

Posted on 08/12/2010 1:41:34 PM PDT by jamese777

That may seem like a ridiculous question, but a recent study found more than 20 million Americans have multiple Social Security numbers associated with their name in commercial records.

The research was conducted by ID Analytics, a San Diego-based company that provides services to both detect identity fraud and to assess consumer identity risk and creditworthiness.

The study found that rather than serving as a unique identifier, more than 40 million SSNs were associated with multiple people.

"Our research shows that Social Security numbers, contrary to popular perception, do not uniquely identify an individual," said Stephen Coggeshall, chief technology officer at ID Analytics.

Many of the duplicate numbers were the result of data entry errors as opposed to deliberate falsification, but the fact that these multiple numbers exist shows that it may be difficult for an organization to rely solely on the SSN to verify an individual's identity.

Using the SSN as the sole means of identification and verification is a risky proposition," Oscherwitz said.

The study also found: More than 100,000 Americans have five or more SSNs associated with their name. More than 15 percent of SSNs are associated with two or more people. More than 140,000 SSNs are associated with five or more people. More than 27,000 SSNs are associated with 10 or more people.

Don’t worry, once we are all RFID-chipped, it would solve all this confusion.

Guess they had to quickly get this story together to fend off all those questioning why deOne has a curious SSN.

The SSA is straining at the seams trying to keep you from finding that out. They actually can very easily track how many illegals are using your SSN. And, they are keeping the accounts straight for the most part. You have to realize in this day and age even the simplest of programs can find 'duplicate' entries. Why isn't the SSA doing it? The answer is: They are!; they just aren't telling you. This is a windfall, fiscally, to them because they get the contributions, but don't formally owe the false identities crap. All they have to do is to keep you unaware.

What the SSA doesn't realize (or does but has their head stuck in the sand) is that when Kommaner Kiddie Zer0 legalizes them they will be screaming their lungs out for SS and the contributions they made. Talk about instant bankruptcy....we are in for some real $hit in the next few months.

USCIS noted that 6.2 percent of all E-Verify queries involve an illegal alien new hire. “Primarily due to identity fraud, E-Verify only correctly found that unauthorized workers —not all workers — were not work authorized about half (54 percent) of the time,” USCIS said. “As a result, the 54 percent statistic relates only to the 6.2 percent figure . . . and means that of all E-Verify queries, only approximately 3.3 percent are for unauthorized workers that were incorrectly found work authorized.”

http://www.numbersusa.com/content/learn/enforcement/workplace-verification/e-verify-setting-record-straight.html

To address the ID fraud issue, USCIS now includes legal immigrant workers’ photos from green cards and immigrant work authorization documents in E-Verify. This makes it easy to keep an illegal alien from submitting someone else’s name, date of birth and immigration work number.
At least 10 states and the federal government require government contractors to use E-Verify to ensure they employ only Americans and legal immigrants. Three states require all employers to use E-Verify screening.

"The study found that rather than serving as a unique identifier, more than 40 million SSNs were associated with multiple people."

As part of my employment I have access to a number of these commercial databases, and I'm surprised that's all. Typically every husband/wife will be "associated" with each other's SSN. Likewise, depending on the algorithms used by the data provider, linkages may also show for co-signers of loans, joint property owners, etc. That's not to say there aren't people out there misusing other's SSNs, but simply saying one person is "associated" with more than one SSN should not, in and of itself, be considered any kind of revelation.

I was in the Ohio State Univ marching band during the 1970s and early 80s. There was a trumpet player in my class that was missing the pointer finger on his right hand. So, he played the trumpet with the other 3 - shifted by one compared to others. The joke was, “What does Dave and a SS number have in common?” They both have 9 digits. It helps to have a rough sense of humor in that environment.

Don’t worry, once we are all RFID-chipped, it would solve all this confusion.

I already have a hack for the RFID-Chip. I can make you appear 'electronically', as anyone you would like. All you have to do is supply me with the desired SSN, and some CASH, and then come by a location I will give you, so I can 'flash' your 'chip'.

In the future there will be guys with athletic hoods standing on street-corners, offering to 'flash' your 'chip', instead of selling you 'crack'.

Welcome to the NEW WORLD.

THANKS TO CONGRESS, if someone uses your Social Security number illegally, SSA is FORBIDDEN BY LAW to give you any information about it whatsoever. You have no right to know what they did, how they did it, the results, what SSA did to remedy the situation, in fact, nothing. Squat. You don’t even have a right to know how it impacted YOUR account. This is not a rule or reg, this is a federal law. It should be changed.
