Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and White House Economist Jared Bernstein on Wednesday announced $1.8 billion in new broadband Internet subsidies funded by the stimulus program. The subsidies are intended to encourage telecommunications companies to build broadband networks in rural areas where it is not normally profitable to do so. (See White House news release) In a conference call on Wednesday, Locke described the subsidies as “investments.” He said the taxpayer money would help build high-speed Internet networks in areas where the private sector has been “unwilling or unable” to do so.

I’m sure this is in the Constitution some place. He has no authority over the internet or how it operates. He would do well to stay out of Americans lives and think about the security of the nation.

Satellite is available everywhere, morons.

WHO is this money going to? Details, details.. follow the money. Somehow it ends up in some union’s or donor’s pocket. Bank on it.

"Investing" in something the private sector has already shown to be unprofitable.

Exhibit A of why Democrats should never be in power.

poles, wires?

Obama giving a gift to his corporate backers in Telecom?

Absolutely. A cable wire out front doesn't necessarily mean people are going to have the money or the interest to subscribe.

“He has no authority over the internet or how it operates. He would do well to stay out of Americans lives and think about the security of the nation.”

Tell him that.

A few months ago I posted a comment about this very thing. We live in a rural area. Nomansland, if you will. Internet service is costly, especially if you wish to go wireless. We contacted a new small business owner. He wanted to provide wireless internet service, but his location was too far from our own to provide anything. The owner asked me to write a letter to the administration because, as he eagerly pointed out, Obama wants to make internet access available to every person, including those in isolated areas.

I hung up the phone and never called back. The first thing that came to mind was, “No, Obama doesn’t wish to provide service. Obama wants to keep tabs on everyone, and especially those in rural America.”

And here it is. In plain black and white. Big Brother home, and he’s taking names.

If the budget deficit were not 1.2 trillion dollars I could support government funding basic infrastructure work. But spending (printing) money right now seems like a bad idea.

RC2,

I forgot to mention that the owner wanted me to write the letter because Obama wanted to dish out money to small businesses such as his in order to subsidize. My letter would show Big Brother that there were people out in rural America who were in need of their “help”.

FReeps,

Good idea, take the money from NASA and dump it there.

Having destroyed job creation in the USA, Obama understands that
some infrastruture spending is needed to create employment in internet
porn, identity theft, etc.
(OK, I’m being a LITTLE sarcastic...but if this is Obama’s objective
I shall not be shocked.)

Accually, it’s Congress who’s mandating this. They appropriated $7.2 billion for broadband programs under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in February. According to Government Accountability Office Report GAO-10-823, August, 2010, the Government awarded $2.2 billion of that money in round 1 and has a September 30, 2010, deadline to obligate the remaining $4.8 billion.
