Libertarian James Quigley is Asking for Your Vote and Help Defeating Bobby Scott on Nov 2nd (Congress, VA-3)
Campaign Update: I apologize for the lack of updates in the last few weeks, but the candidate forums, debates, and interviews took up much of my time and focus. When you are running outside of the two-party system, every public appearance must be a homerun. Good news, though. The preparation paid off as I believe I won each and every debate against Mr. Bobby Scott.
Why I Oppose Bobby Scott and Why It’s Time to Put A Libertarian in the House: Bobby Scott has built a legacy on the idea that he has protected the individual rights of his constituents, but he was only playing party politics. Before January of 2009, he did oppose the 1st half of TARP, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the passage of bills that led to greater government surveillance on Americans such as the Patriot Act. After President Bush left office, however, the marching orders of the Democratic Party changed and so did Mr. Scott’s voting record.
Mr. Scott voted for HR 2346, the $106 War Supplemental Act in a time when Afghanistan’s President Karzai has been implicated in rigging elections to his advantage, running a large portion of his country’s drug trade, negotiating with the Taliban, and using the Bank of Kabul to rob from his own people. Mr. Karzai is a thieving dictator over his own citizens and does not deserve to be defended by the further spilling of American blood. If Mr. Scott truly was against the war he would be vocally opposed to the Democratic Party’s continuation of it.
Mr. Scott will not protect the privacy rights of American citizens. He supports Card Check, which would remove the right to anonymous voting for Unionization and would expose opponents of Unionization to intimidation. He also voted for the 2009 extension of the Patriot Act, and also for the Cybersecurity Act of 2009. Our federal and state governments have used often used such laws against its own citizens, and has recently been willing to put groups such as Oath Keepers, the Black Panthers, Campaign for Liberty, and other anti-establishment organizations on warning lists. There has been an increase of government surveillance on the internet, and growing concern that there is no such thing as privacy on the web due to government monitoring. According to a March 2009 article from Wired.com, Rod Beckstrom quit as Mr. Obama’s Cyber-Security czar. He resigned after complaining that the National Security Agency (NSA) has gathered too much intelligence collecting power over the internet, and that the NSA was an intelligence collecting agency, not a defense agency. The government’s monitoring of civilian activities over the internet has only grown further after Mr. Scott’s recent votes.
Mr. Scott has always been a friend to the financial industry and corporate interests. He voted for the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999, which removed the final protections of Glass-Steagall, and he voted for the Interstate Banking Act of 1994, which allowed national banks to merge with state banks. These bills led to the creation of the Too Big to Fails which are now a danger to the global economy due to their size and the effects if they collapse. Mr. Scott voted for the second half of TARP, HR 1, also known as the bailouts. Because of his pro-banking past there is every reason to believe he participated in the affirmative voice vote for HR 3808 (quietly passed without voting records in the House and Senate), which sought to protect the banks from legal challenges now that the Too Big to Fails have been caught doing fraudulent and illegal foreclosures. The anger over HR 3808 became so pronounced that President Obama was forced to pocket veto it.
Mr. Scott has also been a friend to large, corrupt corporations. He voted for the Cash for Clunkers program, which removed used, affordable vehicles from the market and helped bail out the automobile corporations. Mr. Scott voted for Cap and Trade Bill, which many see as a scam that will raise energy costs on our citizens. Mr. Scott did not come out against the Dendron Coal Plant, despite the abnormally high mercury levels found in the 3rd Congressional District, much higher than normal in comparison to other districts. He voted for the Health Care Bill, despite acknowledging my claims during the Hampton candidate forum that the bill was a gift to the insurance companies, forcing tens of millions of Americans to purchase a service from private corporations, and subsidizing the same corporations with taxpayer money. Despite the large debt and corruption in the government, Mr. Scott has not been critical of Congress’ refusal to not produce a budget this year, nor will he support the an audit of the Federal Reserve System.
Mr. Scott needs to go. He has been in Congress for too long and is continuing the worst practices of the Bush administration and the previous corrupt Republican-majority Congress. It is time to send a message to the Democratic and Republican parties in this country. It is time to vote Libertarian.

Help me protect not only your own liberties, but the liberties of your neighbors and fellow American citizens. Every vote is a message and I truly believe we can win this seat!

Voting libertarian = helping put a Democrat in office.
That is actually a major part of the Democrat’s strategy this cycle. They are backing 3rd party libertarian and Tea party challengers to help siphon off votes from the Republican candidate. In many races the Democrats know they can’t get past 47-48% so they are counting on conservative 3rd party challengers to split the right of center vote so they can win.
Voting 3rd party is, with few exceptions, virtually always stupid.
Long ago, I joined the Libertarian Party. And I've cast a number of votes for Libertarian candidates (but not lately). I have a number of problems with the LP, and I don't see myself drifting back in that direction, but I fully agree that 2010 is the GOP's last chance.
If the Republicans don't push hard for real government reform, then I'm done with them. They will be the new Whigs, and they won't get my vote again. I'd support a third party, or else I'd stay home and wait for the inevitable shooting to start.
I don't think third party is a good choice in 2010. I'm voting straight Republican this year (as always).
But this may be the last year I'll say that.

Conservative Chuck Smith is the Republican nominee for that district. He is a black man, former Marine JAG officer and EXCELLENT candidate.

I'm not going to blow my vote on a anti Israel/pro narcotic drugs party.
I wouldn't say AS bad, but they are not the answer. Voting libertarian is, at best, a wasted vote. The reality is libertarians and other 3rd party candidates just act to split the conservative leaning vote and make it easier for Democrats to get elected. This is why one major part of the Democratic Party's strategy this year is to actively support libertarian and Tea Party 3rd party candidates.
If libertarians really consider themselves conservatives then they should fight for the candidates they prefer within the confines of the Republican primary. If they don't consider themselves conservatives, well then, why are they posting on conservative forums like this in the first place?

Usually I will go down through the ballot and vote independent if I am convinced they are conservative.
I have supported some libertarian candidates in the past as well because like you, I don't agree with allot of their platform, they believe in smaller / limited government.
I want government outta my life and stop telling us how to run our lives.
No smoking, too much salt, gotta throw that seatbelt on all the while the motorcycle rider has no helmet, red light cameras, gotta use plastic rather than paper....oh wait, you might strangle a freakin dolphin with plastic.
