Jerry Brown bans official California state trinkets

Ironically, some of the $7.5 million in official state giveaways implore Californians not to be wasteful.

By Annalyn Censky, staff reporterFebruary 18, 2011: 4:44 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- California Governor Jerry Brown is getting serious about his state's $25 billion shortfall. He has frozen state hiring, cut official cell phone use, and now, he's cracking down on coffee mugs and key chains.

In his latest push to close his state's staggering deficit, Brown has forbidden all state agencies from wasting tax dollars on freebie trinkets like hats and cups.

Cut regulations
Cut public pension costs
Cut size of gov’t
Cut aid to illegals

Then we can talk.

“it’s all a lie... I didn’t have a plan for California......

You run for office and, oh, the assumption is, I know what to do. You don’t. I didn’t have a plan for California.......

You say you’re going to lower taxes, you say you’re going to put people to work, you’re going to improve the schools, you’re going to stop crime. Crime is up, schools are worse, taxes are higher, I mean be real.”

Yep.

This is all PR propaganda. Makes him look like a real budget hawk. LOL, Only fools and the ignorant will believe it. Sadly that is most of the voters in Cali.

One thing I would add to your list is start drilling for more Cali oil. It’s out there.

He’s doing these stunts for 2 reasons. The first one is that he actually believes in much of it (and even most of us would support him there). The second reason is to get the public softened up for increasing their taxes. This will be VERY INTERESTING. He knows getting people in the most highly taxed state in the country to agree to fork over even more money to government will be tough - so we’ll see how it goes.

Hopefully he’ll also stop the tourism commercials that Arnie and Maria did (and got paid for).

Those were bad but seeing Moonbeams mug would be even worse.

More than his salary? You’ve got to be kidding.

SAG rules - actors have to be paid was the way the story went.

They collected $235K - until someone found out and they “found a way” to pay it back.

seeing Moonbeams mug

With his stark image due to shaved head, he is an excellent choice for tourism commercials for 'Borg Collective.':-)

This will come as a terrible blow to my trinket manufacturing business.

He has frozen state hiring, cut official cell phone use, and now, he's cracking down on coffee mugs and key chains.

I know this is unpopular, but I am going to defend Moonbeam on this one. It is like JD Rockefeller recycling used paper in his office. You have to draw the line and set the standard on waste and where you place your effort to do your job Folks think things like this don't matter. They are dead wrong. The misappropriation of taxpayer dollars is an attitude of mind. You can't point to the budget and say "boy if we just cut that $500 B" we will all be fine. It is like fat cells and calories. They all grow, and the slimming diet and exercise regime is not just for your little finger, but your whole goddamned bloated body.

The trinket costs $5.00, which is nothing. But some secretary has to order them and some accountant has to account for them, and some contract officer has to hold the "free and fair" open bidding process to procure them, and some regulator has to write the contracting rules and some politician has to take bribes to lean on the system to ensure that when the free and fair and open competition is held, his friend will get the contract.

And so that $5.00 trinket gives rise to $10,000 in a whole state controlled, funded and operated enterprise of trinketry, which when multiplied by the number of trinkets and the interwove skein of crisscrossing contracts and memoranda and state audits and memoranda documenting closure of audit recommendations is more than the amount of money, by a factor of several, needed to close the education cost gap (and if you think the education system does not have its own overhead of criscrossing self-requiring bureaucracy I have swamp land in Florida to sell you - and it isn't even good swamp because it was drained and turned into a superfund site).

And then there is the state highway engineer who thinks that his job is not to deal with trinketry but to ensure that the contractor who is laying the mile of concrete between highway 82 exit 1a and 1b delivers on the contract in accordance with accepted highway engineering standards (i.e. there are folks who are competent and trying to do their job). But he is deemed wierd by his management and his collegues because he insists on doing his job and refuses to attend the weekly trinektry management meetings. And the contractor complains to his boss because he is harsh and unsympathetic because he says he will look at how many yards of concrete per dollar are poured and hasn't yet handed out a trinket or even said whether a trinket will be handed out. It fact, it will turn out that his desk drawers contain no trinkets.

And if you think that this all Twainian or Steynian or Coulterian hyperbole, then you need a tax increase and the time for the revolution is not yet ripe and you will continue to be gang-raped by the government folks who think that trinektry is how they all get along and deliver on taxpayer dollars.

So governor Moonbeam Redux is dead to rights on this one and anyone who knows how to run an enterprise to deliver a needed product should chear him on. You have no idea how expensive the mutual exchange of worthless trinkets is in government. It makes us all feel good while the contractor rapes the taxpayer not delivering on what was paid for.
